Why PUP graduates are top choice of firms

in Jobstreet
Employers prefer graduates from the state-run Polytechnic University of the Philippines due to their
positive work ethic, according to a survey released by a recruitment portal on Wednesday.

Graduates from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) are the top choice of many
companies when looking for applicants, a recent survey conducted by JobStreet.com Philippines
showed.

Out of 551 companies asked by JobStreet, 45 percent prefer PUP because its graduates, in general,
"are very hard-working, often going the extra mile in their job."

“More than preference for particular colleges and universities, employers prioritize applicants who
show willingness to be trained and to learn. Companies need new employees who can easily adapt to
their processes and systems, learn their products and services, the dynamics of the industry that they
are a part of, and what drives their success," JobStreet.com Philippines country manager Philip Gioca
said.

JobStreet said respondent-employers have also found that PUP graduates have the drive to succeed
and do not give up on assignments given to them, thus having the tendency to stay longer in a
company.

The respondents also said PUP graduates have reasonable demands and don’t usually display attitude
of self-entitlement.

"Primadonnas and newbies who think they don’t need training won’t get hired. Where a fresh
graduate got his or her diploma won’t matter as much as his or her eagerness to learn and showing
the ability to absorb concepts and apply them in the office setting," Gioca added.
Duterte vetoes bill designating PUP as
national university

President Rodrigo Duterte has vetoed a bill that would designate the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines (PUP) as a national university, saying the performance
of its satellite campuses and extension programs needs to be evaluated.

Under the measure approved by Congress, PUP would be given the same status as the
University of the Philippines and Mindanao State University, public tertiary schools
that enjoy fiscal autonomy.

National universities are also allowed to craft their own academic program provided
that they would still consult with the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd).

"I have serious reservations on the sustainability of the means chosen to attain this
end," Duterte said in his veto message dated September 4 but released to the media
Saturday.

"Its proposed designation as national polytechnic university needs to be reassessed in

light of its current performance ranking among other SUCs," he said.

"The comparative performance of its satellite campuses and extension programs needs
to be similarly evaluated before granting the PUP system as a whole such a privileged
status," he said, referring to the university's 20 other branches.

Pylon run
Members of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity of the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines carry a political message as they sprint naked around the campus during
their Pylon Run to celebrate PUP’s 109th anniversary on Tuesday.
PUP has a variety of longstanding traditions and celebrations such as its month-long Founding
Anniversary held every October, with post-foundation anniversary events being held afterwards. The
Pylon Run, held annually at during founding anniversary by the PUP chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is
PUP's own version of the Oblation Run.
