1. A saturated liquid mixture of hexane (1) – octane (2) with z 1 = 0.60 is fed to a distillation column. The reflux ratio is
1.5 Rmin. The top product is 94 % mol of hexane and the bottom product is 10 %. The feed is a superheated vapor (H F=
14,500 cal/gmol). Assume that a total condenser is used and the column operates at 1 atm. Use an enthalpy scale of
-5000 to 30000 cal/gmol. (a) Find the minimum reflux ratio, (b) the equilibrium stages, (c) the optimal stage feed, and
(d) the liquid and vapor composition of the second stage.

2. A saturated liquid mixture of hexane (1) – octane (2) with z 1 = 0.40 is fed to a distillation column. The reflux ratio is
1.2. The top product is 95 % mol of hexane and the bottom product is 10 %. (a) Find the minimum number of stages,
