Lesson Plan
Objective: By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to recognize the characters exaggerated
qualities, accomplishments, and a goal that drives the character. The student will also be able to
distinguish where the story takes place and what certain characteristics make up a tall tale that takes
place throughout the story.
Procedures:
Discuss what tall tales are and how exaggerations are incorporated as well as how the
characters are portrayed with an abundance of exaggerated qualities and looking at where the
story takes place.
Student will read, The Bunyans and Pecos Bill
Encourage student to recognize the illustrations that are displayed on each page and how the
pictures relate to a tall tale. Also, encourage the student to compare and contrast both stories
and how they are related to a tall tale.
Student will use the strategy visualizing and imagery to create a mental picture of the
exaggerations displayed throughout both stories if the story came to life.
Closure: Student will complete the tall tale graphic organizer which exemplifies the characters traits and
the tall tale exaggerations that was taught today.

Overview of Learning/Reflection:
Name__________________________________________________ Date_______________________
Tall tales are filled with exaggerated characters and events. The
characters, and their accomplishments, are often “larger than life.”
Often, the character is driven by one important goal that he or she
must accomplish. Many tall tales also explain, in a fictional and
fanciful way, how geographical features were formed or how other
elements of nature occurred. Use this chart to compare the
characters of Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan, all of which are important
figures of American folklore.
