Instructor
Objectives
1. To be able to construct a flat back pattern.

2. To be familiarized with the basic hand tools.

3. To Enhance the creativity and technical knowledge of the students in

wood-working practice.

4. To test the student’s comprehension and skills in making a one-piece

pattern (flat back)

List of Materials
1. Files – these are the tools used for shaping and forming the wooden piece into the desired
shape and edge with particular smoothing.

2. Try Square – these tool is used to measure in inches and in pieces of wood especially in
woodworking and this tool is also accurate in measuring an angle or 90 degrees .
3. Back Saw- The type of saw used to make straight cuts and basically contain a metal
stiffening rib on top to provide precise cuts.

4. Compass Saw- This particular type of saw is used to make precise and small cuts , in this
particular experiment we used this after drilling the hole on the inside part of the wood in
order to cut and form the hole.

5. Electric Drill Press- This machine is used to make holes on wood and you should be
knowledgeable with the type of bit to use in order to have good results.
6. Sand Paper- We used this tool or material to have a smooth and fine finish on the wood in
the experiment.

1 1
7. 1 piece solid wood (5’’ x 22’’ x 2’’)- This material is the main object in our experiment
and it is the one to be modified to form the desired specifications that the instructor has
given to us.

8. Wood Chisel-This tool is used to give make shapes and cuts to carve the wood to make
its form to help shape and precisely cut the wood.
9. Wood Plane-This tool is used to enhance the surface wood and by using it the wood will
make a smooth edge and to have a smooth surface on it.

Procedures
1. First is to make an outline on the first side of the wooden block, mark the sides to be
tapered, to be cut and to be drilled.

2. Using the backsaw, cut the excess wood on the sides that is needed to be removed.
3. After cutting the sides, go to the electric drill press along with the laboratory assistant and listen
to the instructions while executing the drill operation.

4. With the holes present in the wood, use the compass saw and make necessary cuts in the inner
part of the block.

5. After cutting the inner portion of the block, use the files to precisely smoothen the edges and
sides of the block in order to form its desired figure and shape.
6. After filing and smoothing the edges and the inner portion of the wood, we used the sandpaper
to give more smoothness and to polish the wood in order to give more accurate and successful
results.
