Creativity and Dadasaheb Phalke

As a child, Phalke displayed great interest in the creative arts.

Determined to pursue his dreams, he joined the Sir J.J. School of
Art, Bombay (now Mumbai), in 1885. While there he pursued a
variety of interests, including photography, lithography,
architecture, and amateur dramatics, and he became adept even
at magic. He briefly worked as a painter, a theatrical set designer,
and a photographer. While working at the lithography press of
celebrated painter Ravi Varma, Phalke was significantly influenced
by a series of Varma’s paintings of the Hindu gods, an impression
that was evident in Phalke’s own portrayal of various gods and
goddesses in the mythological films he later made.

Raja Harishchandra is a 1913 Indian silent film, directed and
produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. It is often considered the first full-
length Indian feature film. Raja Harishchandra features Dattatraya
Damodar Dabke, Anna Salunke, Bhalchandra Phalke, and Gajanan
Vasudev Sane and is based on the legend of Harishchandra, with
Dabke portraying the title character. The film, being silent, had
English, Marathi, and Hindi-language inter titles.

Phalke decided to make a feature film after watching The Life of

Christ (1906) at a theatre in Mumbai, then known as Bombay. He
went to London for two weeks to learn filmmaking techniques and
founded Phalke Films Company. He imported the hardware
required for the filmmaking and exhibition from England, France,
Germany, and the United States. Phalke shot a short film Ankurachi
Wadh (Growth of a Pea Plant) to attract investors for his venture. He
published advertisements in various newspapers calling for the cast
and crew. As no women were available to play female leads, male
actors performed the female roles. Phalke was in charge of script,
direction, production design, make-up, film editing, along with film
processing. Trymbak B. Telang handled the camera. Phalke
completed filming in six months and 27 days producing a film of
3,700 feet (1,100 m), about four reels.

13
Last days of Dadasaheb Phalke

The times changed and Phalke fell victim to the emerging

technology of sound film. Unable to cope with the talkies, the man
who had fathered the Indian film industry became obsolete. His last
silent film Setubandhan was released in 1932 and later released
with dubbing. During 1936–1938, he produced his last film
Gangavataran (1937) which was the only talking movie directed by
Phalke, before retiring to Nashik, where he passed away on
February 16, 1944, in Nashik, Bombay, British India, at the age of 73.
He struggled against all odds and despite the displeasure of the
British, the advent of the World War and his own financial struggles,
he accomplished his dream of having an Indian film industry.

14
Saraswatibai Phalke: The Lady behind Dadasaheb Phalke success
Did you know that India’s first film editor was a woman named
Saraswatibai Phalke? Apart from mixing film-developing chemicals,
perforating raw film sheets at night by the light of a candle, and
holding white bedsheets for hours in the blazing sun as light
reflectors, she also cooked for a film unit comprising approximately
60-70 people. But not many know of her contribution to Indian
cinema — she is largely known only for being wife to the much
celebrated Dadasaheb Phalke, who directed India’s first silent film
Raja Harishchandra (1913) .

Saraswatibai sold some of their belongings to raise money for

Dadasaheb to travel to England and learn the craft of filmmaking
from Cecil Hepworth, one of the founders of the British film industry.
When he returned to India, and started talking about his plans to
make films, some of his friends were terribly unsupportive. They
even tried to get him admitted to a mental asylum. However,
Saraswatibai stood by him; she sold her jewellery to bolster the
finances for Raja Harishchandra. With these funds, Dadasaheb
bought a camera and other equipment from Germany.

Best actor (male) Shahid kapoor
Shahid Kapoor is a Bollywood actor who carved his own way into the Hindi film industry, and his initial
roles in the films helped him create a chocolate boy image. Son of actor Pankaj Kapur and dancer
Neelima Azeem, Shahid Kapoor started off as a background dancer for Hindi films while working for
Shiamak Davar's dance institute, and has been part of the industry for 20 years.

ACTING CAREER
Shahid Kapoor showed a keen interest in dancing at a young age. After coming to Mumbai, he joined
Shiamak Davar's dancing institute. Shahid first worked as a background dancer in films Dil To Pagal
Hai (1997) and Taal (1999). Soon, he started performing for multiple shows with Shiamak's dance crew.
During the end-of-the-year performance at Shiamak's institute, Shahid was felicitated with a special
award when he danced on Madonna's 'Vogue' and 'Golden Eye', a song from a James Bond film. This
encouraged him to take up dancing more seriously and became an instructor at the institute. Once
Shahid accompanied his friend to an audition for a Pepsi advertisement. Instead, Shahid bagged the
role and appeared in his first commercial along with Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
Thereafter, he appeared in many commercials and music videos. He appeared in Aryans' music video
of popular song 'Ankhon Main' along with Hrishitaa Bhatt. The producer of this video, Ramesh Taurani,
noticed Shahid and asked him to work on himself for two years. Shahid, 20 years old at that time,
started attending acting workshops of Naseeruddin Shah and Satyadev Dubey. Ken Ghosh had a script
of a romantic film and was looking for a fresh face when Ramesh Taurani recommended him Shahid's
name. Ken signed Shahid for Ishq Vishk starring Amrita Rao, which released in 2004. The film was a
winner at the box office, making Shahid a star over-night. In the same year, he won the Filmfare Award
for 'Best Male Debut'. After his first film, the actor appeared in series of films like Fida, Dil Mange More,
Deewane Huye Paagal, and Shikhar, which did not do well at the box office.

In 2007, Shahid Kapoor gave one of his career best film with his co-star Kareena Kapoor- Jab We Met
directed by Imtiaz Ali. His portrayal of a mature and quiet Aditya Kashyap was loved by the critics as
well as the audience.. A box office hit and a critically acclaimed film, the critics lauded the rugged look
of Shahid along with his chemistry with on-screen ladylove Priyanka Chopra. The actor played a role of
a Squadron Leader in the film Mausam, which was directed by his father Pankaj Kapur. This is the first
time where the father-son worked together for a film. Films like Teri Meri Kahaani and Phata Poster
Nikhla Hero bombed at the box office.

Best actor people’s choice award “Ranveer Singh”

Ranveer Singh Bhavnani (born 6 July 1985) is an Indian actor who appears in Hindi films.
The recipient of several awards, including three Filmfare Awards, Singh is among the
highest-paid actors in the country and has featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since
2012.

ACTING CAREER
Ranveer Singh did not start his career in the industry as an actor. He, in fact, worked as an
assistant director on ad films with Shaad Ali. He later gave up direction and started
auditioning for various roles. Despite being offered ads and minor roles in movies, he did not
take them up waiting for a substantial enough offer. His patience paid off when he was called
to audition for the lead role in YRF`s Band Baaja Baaraat. In his debut, he convincingly
played the role of a Delhi-based slacker Bittoo Sharma opposite Anushka Sharma. Prior to
the release, trade analysts said that the movie would flop but much to their surprise it was a
hit and Ranveer garnered appreciation for his portrayal of Bittoo Sharma, and won the
Filmfare for the Best Male Debut.
In 2013, Ranveer went on to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his adaptation of Romeo
and Juliet, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, opposite Deepika Padukone, where he essayed
the role of a happy-go-lucky Gujarati boy, Ram. The movie was a commercial success and
turned out to be Singh`s highest grossing movie as on 2015. In his next movie, Gunday, he
played the role of a Bengali gangster alongside Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
Two years after Ram-Leela, Singh reunited with Sanjay Leela Bhansali when he was signed
for playing Peshwa Bajirao in his epic romance Bajirao Mastani opposite Deepika Padukone
and Priyanka Chopra. His performance was very well received and is considered to be one
of his best acts. The movie not only was a commercial success but also won 14 awards at
the 61st Filmfare Awards.
His 2018 releases included Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s period drama Padmavat co-starring
Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor. The film is one of the most expensive Hindi films and
became Indian cinema`s highest grossing release. In the same year, Singh essayed the role
of a policeman in Rohit Shetty`s action comedy Simmba, alongside Sara Ali Khan. The film is
a remake of the Telugu action-drama Temper. His 2019 releases include Zoya Akhtar`s Gully
