ENMU Presents World Premiere
The Department of Theatre and Digital Filmmaking at Eastern New Mexico
University presents “Las Arañas” written by Leonard Madrid.

PORTALES, NM –February 8, 2019– Eastern New Mexico University presents the world
premiere of “Las Arañas” written by ENMU Alumni Leonard Madrid. The premiere will be held Feb
28th through March 2nd at 7 p.m. and March 3rd at 2 p.m. in the University Theater Center.

The setting of the play, “Las Arañas” is in New Mexico and is a folktale involving love, women
healers, and giant spiders with elements of horror and fantasy. The cast will consist of four to eight
ENMU students. The setting takes place on the grounds of Las Arañas, mythical monsters who
crave the blood of the wicked. "This is a unique opportunity to see the world premiere of a new
play written by a Portales native and an ENMU alum. The story combines folklore, drama, humor
and horror in a way that celebrates New Mexican culture and contemporary social concerns," said
director Jon Bar, Associate Professor of Digital Filmmaking and ENMU.

The playwright, Madrid, has an MFA in dramatic writing, a BA in lighting and set design, and a
BFA from Eastern New Mexico University in theatre. Many of his plays have received the
Kennedy Center’s Award for Latino Playwrights. He has also received other awards and his
plays have been featured around the nation. He works as a designer, actor, playwright, and
educator in Albuquerque, NM.

Admission is free to ENMU students with their student ID and $7 to the general public .
