Understand Emotional Intelligence

Simple Definition of EQ

Its your ability to identify what you are feeling,

why you are feeling it, and how your feelings
affect on you and those around you
EI and EQ
• Emotional Intelligence refers to a person’s inherent potential
• Each one is born with a certain potential for emotional
sensitivity, emotional memory, emotional processing and
emotional learning ability. It is these four inborn components
which form the core of one’s emotional intelligence
• The impact of lessons learnt from life experiences results
in what we refer to as one’s level of “EQ”
• “EQ” represents a relative measure of a person’s healthy or
unhealthy development of their innate emotional intelligence.

Elements of EQ
Five elements that define EQ:

• Self-awareness.
• Self-regulation.
• Motivation.
• Empathy.
• Social skills.
Three Competencies within Self-Awareness

The Self-Awareness cluster contains three basic

competencies or subcategories:

1. Emotional self-awareness
2. Accurate self-assessment
3. Self-confidence
Elements of EQ: Self Awareness
People who are self aware:
✓ Understand their emotions, and because of this, they don't
let their feelings rule them.
✓ They're confident – because they trust their intuition and
don't let their emotions get out of control.
✓ They're also willing to take an honest look at themselves.
✓ They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they work
on these areas so they can perform better.

Many people believe that this self-awareness is the most

important part of EI.
Self - Actualization

The ability to realize your potential. This component of

emotional intelligence is manifested by becoming

involved in pursuits that lead to a meaningful, rich and

full life.
Tips for Developing
Emotional Self-Awareness
– Pay attention to the physical reactions aroused in your body during stressful
situations.
– Keep a journal where you write down your behaviors and inner feelings when faced
with stressful situations on a daily basis.
Accurate Self-Assessment
– When interacting with people with whom you feel comfortable, ask for their
constructive feedback about your actions and behaviors.
– Make a list of what you believe to be your strengths as well as any areas where
development is needed, and then compare your own list and a similar list prepared
by someone else.
Self-Confidence
– Adjust your thinking and behaviors so that they closely match those of someone
whose models that trait of self-confidence—with that model in mind, act decisively,
instead of self-consciously watching your every move.
– Find someone you trust who would be willing to help you to objectively analyze
your abilities.
Elements of EQ: Self-regulation
People who are self regulated:

✓ It is the ability to control emotions and impulses.

✓ People who self-regulate typically don't allow themselves
to become too angry or jealous, and they don't make
impulsive, careless decisions.
✓ They think before they act. Characteristics of self-
regulation are thoughtfulness, comfort with change,
integrity , and the ability to say no.
Elements of EQ: Motivation
People who are self motivated:

✓ People with a high degree of EI are usually

motivated.
✓ They're willing to defer immediate results for long-
term success.
✓ They're highly productive, love a challenge, and are
very effective in whatever they do.
Empathy

The ability to understand what others might be feeling

and thinking.
It is the ability to view the world through another
person's eyes.
Elements of EQ: Empathy
People who are Empathetic:
✓ This is the second-most important element of EI.
✓ Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand
the wants, needs, and viewpoints of those around you.
✓ People with empathy are good at recognizing the
feelings of others, even when those feelings may not be
obvious. As a result, empathetic people are usually
excellent at managing relationships , listening , and
relating to others.
✓ They avoid stereotyping and judging too quickly, and
they live their lives in a very open, honest way.
Elements of EQ: Social skills
People with high Social skills:

✓ It's usually easy to talk to and like people with good

social skills, another sign of high EI.
✓ Those with strong social skills are typically team players.
Rather than focus on their own success first, they help
others develop and shine.
✓ They can manage disputes, are excellent communicators,
and are masters at building and maintaining relationships.
