The Philippines

Philippines as a nation

1. It is the only country in Asia who has Christianity as its official religion
2. It is the only country in Asia whose language is 60% derived from spanish
3. Philippines might be a very poor country but believe it or not dude, it is the country
with the most friendster accounts...meaning, filipinos are very good in internet usage and
applications in spite of its poverty and lack of good education for the students...

Philippines as state

The Philippine state is not a federation but it is also not as centrally organized as many
neighboring countries. Traditionally, many regions aim at more autonomy, a tendency
that was revived after dictator Marcos left. Marcos had, to his own benefit, strengthened
central state power to the loss of local and provincial units. Local political bosses
regained some of their power after Cory Aquino became President.

Philippines as republic

The Philippines (Filipino: Pilipinas ), officially known as the Republic of the

Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), is a country in Southeast Asia in the
western Pacific Ocean. To its north across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan. West across the
South China Sea sits Vietnam. The Sulu Sea to the southwest lies between the country
and the island of Borneo, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands
of Indonesia. It is bounded on the east by the Philippine Sea. Its location on the Pacific
Ring of Fire and its tropical climate make the Philippines prone to earthquakes and
typhoons but have also endowed the country with natural resources and made it one of
the richest areas of biodiversity in the world. An archipelago comprising 7,107 islands,
the Philippines is categorized broadly into three main geographical divisions: Luzon,
Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila.

With an estimated population of about 92 million people, the Philippines is the world's
12th most populous country. An additional 11 million Filipinos live overseas. Multiple
ethnicities and cultures are found throughout the islands. In prehistoric times, Negritos
were some of the archipelago's earliest inhabitants. They were followed by successive
waves of Austronesian peoples who brought with them influences from Malay, Hindu,
and Islamic cultures. Trade introduced Chinese cultural influences.

Philippines as country

The Philippines, despite some favourable human development indicators, has not reached
its economic potential. The country avoided the worst of the global recession, but
economic growth slowed substantially in 2009. The economy was further affected by the
worst typhoon season in 40 years that devastated Metro Manila and the agricultural
heartland of the country. There are signs of economic recovery in 2010, but steady rather
than dynamic growth over the past two decades is preventing the Philippines from
keeping pace with many of its East Asian neighbours in reducing poverty. Another major
challenge has been the instability in the southern Philippines, which has affected long-
term development prospects and acted as a disincentive for investment.
