1. Differentiate management and leaderships, managers and leaders.

Leadership and Management
Leadership- It’s the action of leading a group towards a common goal. People who lead have
three common attributes:
 They inspire others to share their vision.
 They motivate others to act on that vision.
 They encourage others and help them overcome obstacles in pursuit of that vision.

Management- It’s the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. But the emphasis
does tend to be on things rather than people.

"Leadership is more about change, inspiration, setting the purpose and direction, and building
the enthusiasm, unity and 'staying-power' for the journey ahead. Management is less about
change, and more about stability and making the best use of resources to get things done... But
here is the key point: leadership and management are not separate. And they are not
necessarily done by different people. It's not a case of, 'You are either a manager or a leader'.
Leadership and management overlap..." (From The Three Levels of Leadership, J Scouller,
2011)

Managers and Leaders
Leader and manager have a great role to play in any organization, in the sense that a leader is
the one who inspires, encourages and influence his men, to work willingly, in the attainment of
the organization’s objectives. On the other hand, a manager is an important link between the
firm and its stakeholders, i.e. employees, customers, suppliers, shareholders, government,
society, and so forth. He is the one who performs basic managerial functions.

2. What is the origin of Strategic Planning?
"Our term "strategy" derives from the Greek "strategos," which means, literally, "general of
the army." Each of the ten ancient Greek tribes annually elected a strategos to head its
regiment. At the battle of Marathon (490 BC), the strategoi advised the political ruler as a
council. They gave "strategic" advice about managing battles to win wars, rather than "tactical"
advice about managing troops to win battles. In time, the job of the strategoi grew to include civil
magisterial duties as well, largely because of their status as elected officials.
From these military roots, strategic planning has always aimed at the "big picture." The
focus is on results or outcomes, rather than products or outputs. Strategic planning is less
concerned with how to achieve outcomes than with defining what those outcomes should be"
(Blackerby, 2013, para. 2-3).
The fundamentals of sound planning practices are relatively simple. An organization
should:
a) set clear and unambiguous goals for their planning processes;
b) utilize methodologies that fit both the enterprise, the environmental conditions and
resources available;
c) clearly communicate expectations regarding roles and responsibilities related to the
planning process;
d) establish clear, metrics that can be used in evaluating progress towards goals;and
e) never stop communicating the objectives,strategies and progress throughout the
organization" ( Woyzbun, n.d., p. 7).
