Freedom In The Workplace 2

I will be discussing in this paper on how I would address employees on workplace Equity

and Equality. I will also be telling them what the differences between the two are. As well as

why the two are important in the workplace. I will also be laying out a plan on how to Include it

in the workplace. I will be using a position that I use to have at a job many years ago. I was a

manager on a traveling concessions company that traveled with a Carnival Ride Company. I was

in charge of making sure all the equipment was ready to be moved, set up properly, stocked

accordingly, help hire and fire personnel, as well as maintain the trailers and trucks. I will change

the name of the company as I do not have the rights to it. The company name will be made up

and fictitious.

Dear employees of KR Concessions. I have called this meeting to discuss a couple of

topics. The first is going to be Equity and Equality in the workplace. “The terms equity and

equality are sometimes used interchangeably, which can lead to confusion because while these

concepts are related, there are also important distinctions between them. Equity, as we have seen,

involves trying to understand and give people what they need to enjoy full, healthy lives.

Equality, in contrast, aims to ensure that everyone gets the same things in order to enjoy full,

healthy lives. Like equity, equality aims to promote fairness and justice, but it can only work if

everyone starts from the same place and needs the same things” ( Barbara Clow , Yvonne

Hanson and Jennifer Bernier). In the terms of equity we try to make sure you the employees

have a place to live, access to healthcare when it is needed, as well as competitive wages. Some

of you earn commission and some salary. You were given these options when you were first

employed here at KR Concessions. What we will be implementing is a base salary for theose that

earn a commission. Now it will be less than the salary pay yet we are aiming to make it

competitive so that you have the opportunity to earn the same amount if not more than salary.

Now when it comes to equality I do my best to treat everyone the same. No matter whether you

have more time on the job or not. As you the employees have seen when we are tearing down I

give everyone three chances to get back to work after I tell them to do something. If I see them

standing around after that third warning I will fire them. It does not matter how long you have

worked for this company or not. This is a rule I have and enforce the same way across the board.

Now it does get rid of those who are only here for a quick paycheck. It shows me who is here to

invest in this company’s future.

What I will not be doing is allowing judgment by anyone. Its not fair to say this person

can’t do this because they are female, homosexual or anything like that. Everyone has the same

opportunity as the next person. Everyone will also be getting the exact same benefits as the next

person no preferential treatment just because you’ve been with the company longer than the next

person. There also will no longer be management only meetings. We will be holding crew

meetings from now on instead. Everyone is required to attend. If you have a issue with a

coworker those meetings are the time to bring it up and have it dealt with. We will also be

discussing at these bi-weekly meetings upcoming spots and what is required at these locations

but as well as any route changes so no one is not in the know of what we are doing.

We will be increasing the hourly wage to $10 a hour for salary and for those that have

chosen to take commission pay your hourly rate without commission will be $6.50 a hour. This

is to even the playing field. Based on last years projections with what was made by commission

for each game or food trailer the pay will be equal to that of salary if not slightly more but not by

very much. If the projections are correct the most would be $0.50 more a hour for commission.

Like I said it wont be by much for the difference.

We will be implementing the pay changes at the beginning of the next pay period. The bi-

weekly meetings well we start those now. So once I am done speaking if anyone has anything to

say speak up one at a time and we will discuss things accordingly whether its an issue with a co-

worker or a issue with how things are being run. If you feel it needs to be brought up do so and

don’t hold back. If you guys have suggestions bring those up as well. This will be a time to get

together and speak our minds. I will also be planning excursions to different local places for each

spot we are at. No one will be excluded, and any admission fees will be taken care of by the

company. You will only be responsible for your own food and drink as well as any other

expenses required. So at draw time please plan accordingly. Thank you for your time and I now

open the floor up to anything else that needs to be brought up.
