Present Perfect
Structure: Subject + Has/have + past participle
USE 1: Unspecified Time before Now
We use the Present Perfect to say that an action happened at an unspecified time before now. The
exact time is not important. You CANNOT use the Present Perfect with specific time expressions
such as: yesterday, one year ago, last week, etc. We CAN use the Present Perfect with unspecific
expressions such as: ever, never, once, many times, several times, before, so far, already, yet, etc.
Examples:
- I have seen that movie twenty times.
- There have been many earthquakes in Ecuador.
- Have you read the book yet?

USE 2: Accomplishments
We often use the Present Perfect to list the accomplishments of individuals and humanity. You
cannot mention a specific time.
Examples:
- Man has walked on the Moon.
- My nephew has learned how to read.
- Doctors have cured many deadly diseases.

Actividades Skill development
1. Write some sentences in the Simple Past and include the time of the event.
For example, you might write ‘I walked my dog yesterday’.
2. Then rewrite those sentences using the Present Perfect and the adverb ‘before’.
You should also omit the time marker in the rewritten sentences. For example, ‘Camilo has walked
his dog before’.

2. Ask them questions starting with “Have you ever…?” ask everyone to find something they
have done and no one else in the group has, e.g. “Have you ever traveled to another
country?” Then, depending on their answer, write a short sentence using their responses.
