    • Wikipedia is a multilingual online encyclopedia based on open collaborations through a
    wiki-based content editing system.
    • Wikipedia was originally developed from another encyclopedia project ‘NUPEDIA’.
    • Wikipedia was created by JIMMY WALES and LARRY SANGER and was launched on
    15th January,2001.
    • It features exclusively free contents and no commercial ads and it is owned by a non-
    profit organisation called WIKIMEDIA FOUNDATION which is funded primarily through
    donation.
    • The Five Pillars of WIKIPEDIA are:
    1. Wikipedia is an Encyclopedia.
    2. Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view.
    3. Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use, edit and distribute.
    4. Editors should treat each other with respect and civility.
    5. Wikipedia has no firm rules.
    • Most of Wikipedia’s text and images are licensed under the Creative commons’
    attribution share-alike 3.0(unported license) and GFDL (GNU free documentation
    license).
