Assignment No 2
. A damped SDOF system is subjected to harmonic excitation. Plot Dynamic
Magnification factor D vs Frequency Ratio, 8, for 2%, 5%, 10% and 30% damping
ratios (2 marks). What is maximum D for each case? (1 mark). What is the
magnitude of D if a harmonic force with a frequency of 11 Hz is exciting a SDOF
system (with damping ratio equal to 2% of critical) possessing a natural frequency of
12 Hz (1 mark)
. From the plot of D versus i given in Figure below, compute the damping ratio for the
corresponding SDOF system using “half band width method” for both cases (2 marks)
. A vibration isolation block is to be installed in a laboratory so that the vibration from
adjacent factory operations will not disturb certain experiments. If the isolation block
weighs 20 kN and the surrounding floor and foundation vibrate at 100 cycles per
minute, determine the stiffness of the isolation system such that the motion of the
isolation block is limited to 20% of the floor vibration. Neglect any damping of the
system. (2 marks)
. A sensitive equipment in a physics laboratory is subjected to vibrations stemming from
train vibrations via a tunnel under the laboratory building. The equipment has a mass
of 100 kg and is supported on four springs with a combined stiffness of 320 KN/m and
dashpots providing a damping ratio of 20% of critical. ‘The natural frequency of the
laboratory floor on which the equipment is installed is 10 Hz following a simple
harmonic motion with an amplitude of 5 mm. From these data predict the maximum
train induced vertical motion of the equipment.
