In the 1970s Verissimo published two volumes of his life memoirs and
returned to his relationship with Mexico:
Be as it may, I feel an identification with that land and its people. Well,
identified perhaps is not the right word. It would be better to say that I did
not know Mexico but I loved it. Isn't it the same thing? But of course it is!
Love, as art, is one of the most legitimate forms of knowledge. (Solo de
Clarineta-Segundo Volume 7)49
Verissimo started his book project fully equipped with the tools of
ethnography, but reached a conclusion that perhaps only someone
deeply committed to fictional narrative could find: in the attempt to
grasp culture, love is a form of knowledge that preconditions not just
an articulate understanding of the Other, but any true form of
identification.
