Assignment 1: Fundamentals of Vibrations & Free Vibration of Single Degree of

Freedom System

1 a. Describe TWO (2) examples each of positive and negative impacts of

vibration.
[4 marks]

b. A uniform rigid bar OA of length l and mass m pivots at point O, as shown

in FIGURE Q1b. A torsional spring with a spring constant of 𝑘𝑡 and two linear
spring of constants 𝑘1 and 𝑘2 , respectively, are attached to the bar.

i. Draw the free body diagram of this vibratory system.

[4 marks]

ii. Formulate the equation of motion for this vibratory system. Express the
equation of motion in terms of 𝜃.
[8 marks]

iii. The length l is 1 m, distance a is 0.45 m, mass m is 10 kg, and spring

constants 𝑘𝑡 , 𝑘1 and 𝑘2 are 2 N/m, are 3 N/m and 4 N/m, respectively.

2 The equation of motion of a system is described by:
4𝑥̈ + 200𝑥̇ + 2500𝑥 = 0

a. Determine the free-vibration response of the system when the initial

displacement, 𝑥𝑜 is 1 m and initial velocity, 𝑥̇ 𝑜 is -10 m/s.
[7 marks]

b. Evaluate and explain the changes that could be observed in the free-
vibration response of the system when the initial displacement, 𝑥𝑜 , initial
velocity, 𝑥̇ 𝑜 , mass, m and spring constant, k remain the same, while the
damping constant, c is changed to 100 Ns/m.
