Closing the Digital Divide

Schools could reduce the need for in home internet connectivity. Students have access

to 1:1 program in school, but sometimes when they get home, they don’t have access to the

internet. By offering programs that are already stored on devices and don’t have to be

downloaded. They can also make sure the materials could be downloaded and used offline.

Teachers can start to assign non internet homework.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, a project known as L.I.F.T. is providing help to low-income

families. The program is building and opening labs for the community members. Mobile

technology labs and “earn a laptop and hotspot” initiatives are available for families. There will

also be free unlimited usage. A six-week course training course is offered to help understand

how to use the technology. The graduation rate was 51% when the project started but in the

2016/2017 school year it was almost 90%. That is an over 40% increase! This project focuses on

helping to close the divide.
