12
Key selling Points when competing
against Omicron
◼ How many do we have?

◼ We will cover the top 15 today.

13
Key selling Points when competing
against Omicron
◼ User interface simplicity.
• Megger has received feedback that ours is a much faster
learning curve compared to Test Universe.
• Ease of use allows users to test more complicated relays with
fewer struggles.
• Comtrade playback and the impedance module are rated very
high for ease of use by our customers
• Touch screen simplicity helps insure ease of use
• Easier IEC61850 Goose configuration

14
Key selling Points when competing
against Omicron
◼ Ability to daisy chain 30 currents for testing bus differential relays.
◼ The only full featured built in controller on the market.
• Hand held controller does not have reduced functionality compared to the pc software.
• Addresses customer concerns with cyber security requirements.
◼ The SMRT units are smaller and lighter than the Omicron CMC 353 and CMC 356 units
and have full featured built in controller.
◼ The only unit on the market to provide the simplicity of 60A per channel without
paralleling channels.
◼ Highly reliable ( <4% warranty failure rate) with a modular design to support field
repair/replacement.
◼ Unique SMRT1 is 8.9lb/4 kg stand alone single phase relay test set with 60A output. Has
proven to provide a foot in the door.
◼ Hardware setup on pc is more straight forward in that you do not have to dis-associate a
test set from a pc in order to use another pc with it.
◼ Higher output power at low pickup settings for EM relays.
◼ Bluetooth interface

15
Key selling Points when competing
against Omicron
◼ More advanced test features in the standard software than the Omicron
Protection package with a simpler pricing model.
• Omicron irritates customers with it’s low entry price and then charging for
each software functionality.
• RTMS Standard included advanced testing features that are only included
with “Advanced Protection” from Omicron. Resulting in a lower priced unit.
◼ Flexibility of hardware configurations. Combining multiple SMRT units
together for special test applications such as bus differential testing.
◼ Having the built-in touch screen and software on the SMRT-D models
and the FREJA 500’s.
◼ Higher output on the voltage and current amplifiers for testing legacy EM
relays and high burden test situations.

16
Key selling Points when competing
against Omicron
◼ Establish enough interest to allow a technical relay expert to
come in and give a presentation.
◼ Purchase a demo unit and be able to at least demonstrate
testing an overcurrent relay.

17
Responses to disadvantages to Omicron

◼ IEC61850-9-2 Edition 2 Sampled Values

• We have an unreleased version that we will provide
• Released version will be available in 2018
• Will have IEEE1588 support in 2018
• Additional 61850 programmer approved for 2018 budget
◼ Network Simulation Software
• Too complex for most users
• Utilities typically use other model packages for system design that
will output comtrade files. Why would you want to model the system
a second time?
• We do provide a simple model in our calculator and impedance
modules with % of line specifications

18
Responses to disadvantages to Omicron

◼ Relay Specific Modules

• We currently have what the customer needs or will quickly
provide them.
• We have over 450 modules available (400 overcurrent)
• Not for customer response – new architecture in 2018 will allow
modules to be developed much quicker.
◼ Pricing
• We do not want to lose on price to Omicron
• Many times customers think it is cheaper only to find out that
they have to pay more in the long run to get the software that
they need.

19
Responses to disadvantages to Omicron

◼ Poor accuracy bellow 100 ma

• While Omicron is better, we have the same specifications and meet
the specifications
• Very few relays require currents bellow 100 ma
• The new VIGEN3 which is already in the MRCT, has a 50 ma
channel to address this issue.
◼ Not able to test energy meters up to 0.2S in accordance with IEC
62053 standard.
• This is a relay test set, not a meter test set
• Not for customer response – we will address this by 2019
• It is rumored that Omicron is discontinuing the CMC256 which is
required for this feature.

20
Responses to disadvantages to Omicron

◼ Low – Level Rogowski Outputs

• Should be released in 2018
• If customer has this requirement, contact the factory to approve
free future upgrade.
◼ PMU Testing
• Planed for 2018 development
• Successfully beta tested in MPRT
• Lower priority due to no requests in 2017

21
Responses to disadvantages to Omicron

◼ Customer has an investment in Omicron and is happy with

them
• All customers have issues, state that in our efforts to get better
we would like to know there is any area that Omicron could
improve on.
• Look for unique needs that we could provide (SMRT1?,30
Currents?)
• Approach factory for offering an additional warranty
• Lower cost of ownership due to ease of use
• Risks of having a single supplier for any vendor
• Our support – Give us a chance and we will show you.
