Romans 9-11

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me


witness in the Holy Ghost, (Rom. 9:1 KJV)

This is the truth and I am speaking in Christ, without pretence, as my


conscience testifies for me in the Holy Spirit; (Rom. 9:1 NJB)

I am speaking the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience bears


me witness in the Holy Spirit, (Rom. 9:1 RSV)

Ἀλήθειαν λέγω ἐν χριστῷ, οὐ ψεύδομαι, συμμαρτυρούσης μοι τῆς


συνειδήσεώς μου ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ, (Rom. 9:1 BYZ)

That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. (Rom.


9:2 KJV)

there is great sorrow and unremitting agony in my heart: (Rom. 9:2


NJB)

that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. (Rom.


9:2 RSV)

ὅτι λύπη μοι ἐστὶν μεγάλη, καὶ ἀδιάλειπτος ὀδύνη τῇ καρδίᾳ μου. (Rom.

For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my
brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: (Rom. 9:3 KJV)

I could pray that I myself might be accursed and cut off from Christ, if
this could benefit the brothers who are my own flesh and blood.

For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ
for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race. (Rom. 9:3 RSV)

Εὐχόμην γὰρ αὐτὸς ἐγὼ ἀνάθεμα εἶναι ἀπὸ τοῦ χριστοῦ ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν

Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory,
and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God,
and the promises; (Rom. 9:4 KJV)

They are Israelites; it was they who were adopted as children, the
glory was theirs and the covenants; to them were given the Law and
the worship of God and the promises. (Rom. 9:4 NJB)

They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the
covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;
(Rom. 9:4 RSV)

οἵτινές εἰσιν Ἰσραηλῖται, ὧν ἡ υἱοθεσία καὶ ἡ δόξα καὶ αἱ διαθῆκαι καὶ ἡ


νομοθεσία καὶ ἡ λατρεία καὶ αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι, (Rom. 9:4 BYZ)

Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ
came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. (Rom. 9:5 KJV)

To them belong the fathers and out of them, so far as physical


descent is concerned, came Christ who is above all, God, blessed for
ever. Amen. (Rom. 9:5 NJB)

to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the


flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.

ὧν οἱ πατέρες, καὶ ἐξ ὧν ὁ χριστὸς τὸ κατὰ σάρκα, ὁ ὢν ἐπὶ πάντων, θεὸς

Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are
not all Israel, which are of Israel: (Rom. 9:6 KJV)

It is not that God's promise has failed. Not all born Israelites belong
to Israel, (Rom. 9:6 NJB)

But it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who are
descended from Israel belong to Israel, (Rom. 9:6 RSV)

Οὐχ οἷον δὲ ὅτι ἐκπέπτωκεν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ. Οὐ γὰρ πάντες οἱ ἐξ Ἰσραήλ,
οὗτοι Ἰσραήλ· (Rom. 9:6 BYZ)
Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children:
but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. (Rom. 9:7 KJV)

and not all the descendants of Abraham count as his children, for
Isaac is the one through whom your Name will be carried on. (Rom.
9:7 NJB)

and not all are children of Abraham because they are his
descendants; but "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named."
(Rom. 9:7 RSV)

οὐδ᾽ ὅτι εἰσὶν σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ, πάντες τέκνα· ἀλλ᾽ Ἐν Ἰσαὰκ κληθήσεταί
σοι σπέρμα. (Rom. 9:7 BYZ)

That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the
children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the
seed. (Rom. 9:8 KJV)

That is, it is not by being children through physical descent that


people become children of God; it is the children of the promise that
are counted as the heirs. (Rom. 9:8 NJB)

This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children
of God, but the children of the promise are reckoned as descendants.
(Rom. 9:8 RSV)

Τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν, οὐ τὰ τέκνα τῆς σαρκός, ταῦτα τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ· ἀλλὰ τὰ τέκνα
τῆς ἐπαγγελίας λογίζεται εἰς σπέρμα. (Rom. 9:8 BYZ)

For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara
shall have a son. (Rom. 9:9 KJV)

The actual words of the promise were: I shall come back to you at
this season, and Sarah will have a son. (Rom. 9:9 NJB)

For this is what the promise said, "About this time I will return and
Sarah shall have a son." (Rom. 9:9 RSV)

Ἐπαγγελίας γὰρ ὁ λόγος οὗτος, Κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐλεύσομαι, καὶ
ἔσται τῇ Σάρρᾳ υἱός. (Rom. 9:9 BYZ)

And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one,
even by our father Isaac; (Rom. 9:10 KJV)

Even more to the point is what was said to Rebecca when she was
pregnant by our ancestor, Isaac, (Rom. 9:10 NJB)

And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by
one man, our forefather Isaac, (Rom. 9:10 RSV)

Οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ Ῥεβέκκα ἐξ ἑνὸς κοίτην ἔχουσα, Ἰσαὰκ τοῦ πατρὸς
ἡμῶν- (Rom. 9:10 BYZ)

(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or
evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of
works, but of him that calleth;) (Rom. 9:11 KJV)

before her children were born, so that neither had yet done anything
either good or bad, but in order that it should be God's choice which
prevailed (Rom. 9:11 NJB)

though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or
bad, in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not
because of works but because of his call, (Rom. 9:11 RSV)

μήπω γὰρ γεννηθέντων, μηδὲ πραξάντων τι ἀγαθὸν ἢ κακόν, ἵνα ἡ κατ᾽

It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. (Rom. 9:12
KJV)

-not human merit, but his call -- she was told: the elder one will serve
the younger. (Rom. 9:12 NJB)

though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or
bad, in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not
because of works but because of his call, (Rom. 9:11 RSV)
μήπω γὰρ γεννηθέντων, μηδὲ πραξάντων τι ἀγαθὸν ἢ κακόν, ἵνα ἡ κατ᾽
ἐκλογὴν πρόθεσις τοῦ θεοῦ μένῃ, οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων, ἀλλ᾽ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος,

As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. (Rom.


9:13 KJV)

Or as scripture says elsewhere: I loved Jacob but hated Esau. (Rom.


9:13 NJB)

As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." (Rom. 9:13 RSV)

Καθὼς γέγραπται, Τὸν Ἰακὼβ ἠγάπησα, τὸν δὲ Ἠσαῦ ἐμίσησα. (Rom. 9:13
BYZ)

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God


forbid. (Rom. 9:14 KJV)

What should we say, then? That God is unjust? Out of the question!
(Rom. 9:14 NJB)

What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no


means! (Rom. 9:14 RSV)

Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; Μὴ ἀδικία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ; Μὴ γένοιτο. (Rom. 9:14 BYZ)

For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. (Rom.
9:15 KJV)

For speaking to Moses, he said: I am gracious to those to whom I am


gracious and I take pity on those on whom I take pity. (Rom. 9:15
NJB)

For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and
I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." (Rom. 9:15
RSV)

Τῷ γὰρ Μωϋσῇ λέγει, Ἐλεήσω ὃν ἂν ἐλεῶ, καὶ οἰκτειρήσω ὃν ἂν οἰκτείρω.

So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of
God that sheweth mercy. (Rom. 9:16 KJV)

So it is not a matter of what any person wants or what any person


does, but only of God having mercy. (Rom. 9:16 NJB)

So it depends not upon man's will or exertion, but upon God's mercy.
(Rom. 9:16 RSV)

Ἄρα οὖν οὐ τοῦ θέλοντος, οὐδὲ τοῦ τρέχοντος, ἀλλὰ τοῦ ἐλεοῦντος θεοῦ.

For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose
have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that
my name might be declared throughout all the earth. (Rom. 9:17 KJV)

Scripture says to Pharaoh: I raised you up for this reason, to display


my power in you and to have my name talked of throughout the
world. (Rom. 9:17 NJB)

For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "I have raised you up for the very
purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be
proclaimed in all the earth." (Rom. 9:17 RSV)

Λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφὴ τῷ Φαραὼ ὅτι Εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἐξήγειρά σε, ὅπως
ἐνδείξωμαι ἐν σοὶ τὴν δύναμίν μου, καὶ ὅπως διαγγελῇ τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐν
πάσῃ τῇ γῇ. (Rom. 9:17 BYZ)

Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he


will he hardeneth. (Rom. 9:18 KJV)

In other words, if God wants to show mercy on someone, he does


so, and if he wants to harden someone's heart, he does so. (Rom.
9:18 NJB)

So then he has mercy upon whomever he wills, and he hardens the


heart of whomever he wills. (Rom. 9:18 RSV)

Ἄρα οὖν ὃν θέλει ἐλεεῖ· ὃν δὲ θέλει σκληρύνει. (Rom. 9:18 BYZ)


Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath
resisted his will? (Rom. 9:19 KJV)

Then you will ask me, 'How then can he ever blame anyone, since
no one can oppose his will?' (Rom. 9:19 NJB)

You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can
resist his will?" (Rom. 9:19 RSV)

Ἐρεῖς οὖν μοι, Τί ἔτι μέμφεται; Τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκεν;
(Rom. 9:19 BYZ)

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the
thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
(Rom. 9:20 KJV)

But you -- who do you think you, a human being, are, to answer back
to God? Something that was made, can it say to its maker: why did
you make me this shape? (Rom. 9:20 NJB)

But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded
say to its molder, "Why have you made me thus?" (Rom. 9:20 RSV)

Μενοῦνγε, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ; Μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ


πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι, Τί με ἐποίησας οὕτως; (Rom. 9:20 BYZ)

Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make
one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? (Rom. 9:21
KJV)

A potter surely has the right over his clay to make out of the same
lump either a pot for special use or one for ordinary use. (Rom. 9:21
NJB)

Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump
one vessel for beauty and another for menial use? (Rom. 9:21 RSV)

Ἢ οὐκ ἔχει ἐξουσίαν ὁ κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ, ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος


ποιῆσαι ὃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος, ὃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν; (Rom. 9:21 BYZ)
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power
known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to
destruction: (Rom. 9:22 KJV)

But suppose that God, although all the time he wanted to reveal his
retribution and demonstrate his power, has with great patience gone
on putting up with those who are the instruments of his retribution and
designed to be destroyed; (Rom. 9:22 NJB)

What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his
power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made
for destruction, (Rom. 9:22 RSV)

Εἰ δὲ θέλων ὁ θεὸς ἐνδείξασθαι τὴν ὀργήν, καὶ γνωρίσαι τὸ δυνατὸν αὐτοῦ,


ἤνεγκεν ἐν πολλῇ μακροθυμίᾳ σκεύη ὀργῆς κατηρτισμένα εἰς ἀπώλειαν·
(Rom. 9:22 BYZ)

And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels
of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, (Rom. 9:23 KJV)

so that he may make known the glorious riches ready for the people
who are the instruments of his faithful love and were long ago
prepared for that glory. (Rom. 9:23 NJB)

in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of
mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory, (Rom. 9:23 RSV)

καὶ ἵνα γνωρίσῃ τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σκεύη ἐλέους, ἃ
προητοίμασεν εἰς δόξαν, (Rom. 9:23 BYZ)

Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the
Gentiles? (Rom. 9:24 KJV)

We are that people, called by him not only out of the Jews but out of
the gentiles too. (Rom. 9:24 NJB)

even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from
the Gentiles? (Rom. 9:24 RSV)
οὓς καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς οὐ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐξ ἐθνῶν; (Rom.
9:24 BYZ)

As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not
my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. (Rom. 9:25
KJV)

Just as he says in the book of Hosea: I shall tell those who were not
my people, 'You are my people,' and I shall take pity on those on
whom I had no pity. (Rom. 9:25 NJB)

As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people I will


call `my people,' and her who was not beloved I will call `my
beloved.'" (Rom. 9:25 RSV)

Ὡς καὶ ἐν τῷ Ὡσηὲ λέγει, Καλέσω τὸν οὐ λαόν μου λαόν μου· καὶ τὴν οὐκ
ἠγαπημένην ἠγαπημένην. (Rom. 9:25 BYZ)

And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto
them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of
the living God. (Rom. 9:26 KJV)

And in the very place where they were told, 'You are not my people,'
they will be told that they are 'children of the living God'. (Rom. 9:26
NJB)

"And in the very place where it was said to them, `You are not my
people,' they will be called `sons of the living God.'" (Rom. 9:26 RSV)

Καὶ ἔσται, ἐν τῷ τόπῳ οὗ ἐρρήθη αὐτοῖς, Οὐ λαός μου ὑμεῖς, ἐκεῖ


κληθήσονται υἱοὶ θεοῦ ζῶντος. (Rom. 9:26 BYZ)

Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the


children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
(Rom. 9:27 KJV)

And about Israel, this is what Isaiah cried out: Though the people of
Israel are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will be saved;
(Rom. 9:27 NJB)
And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the
sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will
be saved; (Rom. 9:27 RSV)

Ἠσαΐας δὲ κράζει ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, Ἐὰν ᾖ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὡς
ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, τὸ κατάλειμμα σωθήσεται· (Rom. 9:27 BYZ)

For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because
a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. (Rom. 9:28 KJV)

for without hesitation or delay the Lord will execute his sentence on
the earth. (Rom. 9:28 NJB)

for the Lord will execute his sentence upon the earth with rigor and
dispatch." (Rom. 9:28 RSV)

λόγον γὰρ συντελῶν καὶ συντέμνων ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ· ὅτι λόγον


συντετμημένον ποιήσει κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς. (Rom. 9:28 BYZ)

And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a
seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
(Rom. 9:29 KJV)

As Isaiah foretold: Had the Lord Sabaoth not left us a few survivors,
we should be like Sodom, we should be the same as Gomorrah.
(Rom. 9:29 NJB)

And as Isaiah predicted, "If the Lord of hosts had not left us children,
we would have fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah."

Καὶ καθὼς προείρηκεν Ἠσαΐας, Εἰ μὴ κύριος Σαβαὼθ ἐγκατέλιπεν ἡμῖν


σπέρμα, ὡς Σόδομα ἂν ἐγενήθημεν, καὶ ὡς Γόμορρα ἂν ὡμοιώθημεν. (Rom.
9:29 BYZ)

What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after
righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the
righteousness which is of faith. (Rom. 9:30 KJV)

What should we say, then? That the gentiles, although they were not
looking for saving justice, found it, and this was the saving justice that
comes of faith; (Rom. 9:30 NJB)

What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue
righteousness have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith;
(Rom. 9:30 RSV)

Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; Ὅτι ἔθνη τὰ μὴ διώκοντα δικαιοσύνην, κατέλαβεν


δικαιοσύνην, δικαιοσύνην δὲ τὴν ἐκ πίστεως· (Rom. 9:30 BYZ)

But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not
attained to the law of righteousness. (Rom. 9:31 KJV)

while Israel, looking for saving justice by law-keeping, did not


succeed in fulfilling the Law. (Rom. 9:31 NJB)

but that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law
did not succeed in fulfilling that law. (Rom. 9:31 RSV)

Ἰσραὴλ δέ, διώκων νόμον δικαιοσύνης, εἰς νόμον δικαιοσύνης οὐκ


ἔφθασεν. (Rom. 9:31 BYZ)

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the


works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; (Rom.
9:32 KJV)

And why? Because they were trying to find it in actions and not in
faith, and so they stumbled over the stumbling-stone- (Rom. 9:32
NJB)

Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith, but as if it were
based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,
(Rom. 9:32 RSV)

Διὰ τί; Ὅτι οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως, ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἐξ ἔργων νόμου· προσέκοψαν γὰρ τῷ
λίθῳ τοῦ προσκόμματος, (Rom. 9:32 BYZ)

As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of


offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
(Rom. 9:33 KJV)
as it says in scripture: Now I am laying in Zion a stumbling-stone, a
rock to trip people up; but he who relies on this will not be brought to
disgrace. (Rom. 9:33 NJB)

as it is written, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make


men stumble, a rock that will make them fall; and he who believes in
him will not be put to shame." (Rom. 9:33 RSV)

καθὼς γέγραπται, Ἰδοὺ τίθημι ἐν Σιὼν λίθον προσκόμματος καὶ πέτραν


σκανδάλου· καὶ πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ οὐ καταισχυνθήσεται. (Rom.
9:33 BYZ)

Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they
might be saved. (Rom. 10:1 KJV)

Brothers, my dearest wish and my prayer to God is for them, that


they may be saved. (Rom. 10:1 NJB)

Ἀδελφοί, ἡ μὲν εὐδοκία τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας καὶ ἡ δέησις ἡ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν
ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ ἐστιν εἰς σωτηρίαν. (Rom. 10:1 BYZ)

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not
according to knowledge. (Rom. 10:2 KJV)

I readily testify to their fervour for God, but it is misguided. (Rom.


10:2 NJB)

I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not
enlightened. (Rom. 10:2 RSV)

Μαρτυρῶ γὰρ αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῆλον θεοῦ ἔχουσιν, ἀλλ᾽ οὐ κατ᾽ ἐπίγνωσιν.

For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to


establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves
unto the righteousness of God. (Rom. 10:3 KJV)
Not recognising God's saving justice they have tried to establish their
own, instead of submitting to the saving justice of God. (Rom. 10:3
NJB)

For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and
seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's
righteousness. (Rom. 10:3 RSV)

Ἀγνοοῦντες γὰρ τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην, καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν δικαιοσύνην
ζητοῦντες στῆσαι, τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ θεοῦ οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν. (Rom. 10:3
BYZ)

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that
believeth. (Rom. 10:4 KJV)

But the Law has found its fulfilment in Christ so that all who have
faith will be justified. (Rom. 10:4 NJB)

For Christ is the end of the law, that every one who has faith may be
justified. (Rom. 10:4 RSV)

Τέλος γὰρ νόμου χριστὸς εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι. (Rom. 10:4

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the
man which doeth those things shall live by them. (Rom. 10:5 KJV)

Moses writes of the saving justice that comes by the Law and says
that whoever complies with it will find life in it. (Rom. 10:5 NJB)

Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is
