HYDROGEN

1. Explain what is explosive gas/ the popping and what are its uses?
Answer:
Explosive gas or the popping gas is hydrogen gas (H2) and some of its uses
are as a gas balloon filling gas because of its very light density and as acid
forming when reacting with non-metals.

2. Write down all the raction in these experiments !

Ca(s) + 2H2O(l) → Ca(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) → Mg(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
1. Zn (s) + H2O(g) → ZnO(s) + H2(g)
2. Zn(s) + HCl(aq) → ZnCl(aq) + H2(g)
3. 2KI(aq) + H2O2(aq) → 2KOH(aq) + I2(aq) + H2(g)
4.
MnO
5. 2KClO3(s) 2
panas 2KCl(aq) + 3O2(g)
6. 2KMnO4(s) + H2O2(aq) → 2Mn2(aq) + 2KOH(aq) + 2O2(g)

3. Why should hydrogen peroxide be used in a dilute solution?

Answer:
Hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, has a higher density than water which is
1.47 g / cm3 due to the strong hydrogen bonds. Decomposition of the
compound H2O2 is an exothermic reaction that releases heat. This
compound can act as a powerful oxidizer and reducing agent,
according to the reaction equation:
As an oxidizer: H2O2 + 2I- + 2H + → 2H2O + I2
As a reducing agent: 5H2O2 + 2MnO4– + 6H + → 2Mn2 + + 8H2O +
5O2
Hydrogen peroxide must be used in aqueous solution because the
compound is a strong oxidizer and reducing agent.

OXYGEN
1. Calculate the oxygen gas that present if KClO3 that provide is 1 gram!
Jawab :
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑎 KClO3 1 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚
𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐾𝐶𝑙𝑂3 = =
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑟 KClO3 122,5 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚/𝑚𝑜𝑙
= 0,00816 𝑚𝑜𝑙

MnO2
KClO3(s) KCl(aq) + O2(g) + KClO4(aq)
panas

Beginning 0,00816
Reaction 0,00816 0,00816
Residue - 0,00816
Gas O2 = 0,00816 mol, so
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑂2 = 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑂2 𝑥 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑆𝑇𝑃
𝐿
= 0,00816 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝑥 22,4
𝑚𝑜𝑙
= 0,1828 𝐿 = 182,8 𝑚𝑙

2. Write a Lewis structural formula that shows an O2 molecule with two

unpaired valence electrons!

3. 3. Explain the events in experiments 1 and 2!

Answer:
On the 1st try
potassium chlorate (KClO3) 0.5 gram which is put in a pipe tube then
added a little bit of kawi stone (MnO2) then heated with Mn by KClO3
producing Mn2 + and oxygen gas in the flow of the hose which is
accommodated in a measuring cup and then testing it with a test a
flame on the wood.
In Experiment 2:
Just like experiment 1, Permanganate (MnO4) is inserted into a pipe
tube then added little by little H2O2, but without heating, MnO4 will
be produced by MnO4 which is a reducing agent to produce Mn2 +
and oxygen gas in the flow of the hose which is accommodated in a
measuring cup then test it with flame test on wood.
