PREFACE
Plant doctors or pathologists works with plants comparably to the same way as vegetarians work
with animals and physicians with people. They establish the causal agent of both biotic (fungi,
bacteria, virus, nematode & parasitic plants) and abiotic (temparature, chemical toxicity, mineral
deficiency etc.) plant diseases and study their management by cultural practices, biological and
chemical control and host resistance. Therefore, the fundamental knowledge of all dimensions of
plant pathology are mandatory to be a good plant doctor or pathologist. The present book entitled
“Foundations in Plant Pathology” covers various area of plant pathology viz. landmarks in plant
pathology, plant diseases and their causal agents, fundamentals of mycology, fundamentals of
plant bacteriology, fundamentals of plant virology, basics of plant pathology, the epidemiology
of plant diseases, principles of plant disease managements and techniques in plant pathology.
The book is written to make plant pathology easier to grasp and for understanding the depth of
the subjects through concept based multiple choice questions (MCQs) which are based on
syllabus of various agricultural universities as well as other universities where plant pathology is
taught as a minor course. This book contains over 3300 MCQs with answer at end of each
chapter. This book will also be useful for ICAR-ARS/NET, ICAR-JRF/SRF, ICAR-IARI and
SAUs Ph.D. entrance and other related examinations. All MCQs are prepared from the authentic
sources like standard Books, Journals and Annual Reviews. I am pretty much hopeful that this
book will serve as a quick and good study material to crystal the basic concept of plant pathology
for the beginners. I will always and highly appreciate the healthy critics and valuable suggestion
from the readers especially students and teachers for the improvement of the book and these will
incorporated in subsequent editions.
