Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students can use PowerPoint to create their own books to exemplify
their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. All students can use PowerPoint in the classroom
with access to a computer or tablet. Students can utilize audio, images, text, and video to convey their
knowledge in creating and solving math problems. This can help keep inclusion for visually impaired students
and hearing impaired students learn alongside their peers in the classroom and in out of classroom settings.

Lesson idea implementation: After being introduced to addition and subtraction, students will be instructed
to use PowerPoint to create their own slides to create a book with different addition and subtraction
problems within the number 10. They will use images of objects to create the problem. Students can take
photos of objects or find appropriate images on the internet to creatively design a slide that can be used in
collaboration with the whole class to create the book. The students could work on this project for a week to
create a few addition and subtraction equations and work in groups to create the slides using images they
choose. They would need help from their teachers to complete the project, but working as a class can help
keep the lesson idea working smoothly.

The teacher can record each student or groups of students reading the slides they created for a book that
can be shared with family, friends, and many others outside of the classroom. The different means of
conveying the information helps differentiate learning for all students. Throughout the week, the teacher will
check up on students’ work by visiting the different groups and making sure the students provide an
equation, image, and complete a recording of their slide. When the book is finalized, the teacher will show
the completed book to the class and allow the students to present their slides and discuss their creative
approaches to answering the equation.

Reflective Practice: This activity could get students more comfortable with using the computers and tablets
to create using PowerPoint and other tools. The students could also learn more about addition and
subtraction by viewing other problems answered by their classmates. The book is meaningful because it is a
team effort and something that can be viewed many times by themselves and by family and friends outside of
the classroom. The students could also use the Book Creator app for tablets to draw and design their
equations for more artistic depictions of their knowledge. As students become more comfortable with the
technology and the subject matter, they can make a yearlong book that shows their growth that they can
have as a keepsake for when they move on to first grade.
