The Relationship Between Job Satisfaction and Job Performance

I. Introduction

Job Satisfaction, a need of companies and a need to those working. To the outside world, Job
Satisfaction is nothing but how much someone gets paid but it is so much more than just that. Job
Satisfaction is an employee’s feeling about how they like (or dislike) their current job and if their
work meets their goals and standards. If an employee likes their job, they will do well but if they
do not, then they may be subject to performing less than the expected standards. If a company
finds that job satisfaction is low, they learn how to treat and lead their staff better to engage them
to be more satisfied with their work. It is important for employers to be able to satisfy and monitor
their employee’s job satisfaction so that they may be able to retain them, to do more for the
company, and to be efficient in their work. The employee’s performance is one of the ways to see
how an employee is doing or feeling about the company.

The study looks upon proper monitoring of Job Satisfaction. Without proper monitoring of an
employee’s satisfaction towards their job, profit and work turnover may be less than up to par to
the standards of an organization. This creates problems for everyone. Problems within the
individual, their department, and the organization as a whole. As a result to this, employees may
consider finding a new job and eventually leaving. In order to achieve their strategic aims and
keep their competitive advantage, their employees must perform at high levels (Lado and Wilson,
1994; Dessler, 2011), this explains that performance to a company is essential and very much
needed to succeed.

To higher positions, Job Satisfaction should be their upmost priority and something to consider
to keep their company alive. The Job Performance of those who may not be satisfied with their
job may be high or low which should be a factor that every company should seek to improve and
look upon. Successful organizations depend on the high performance of their employees to meet
their objectives.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to study on how job satisfaction relates and affects job performance and
provide details and factors about it. It seeks ways on what should be done and how it will be done.
Problems affecting Job Performance may possibly root from a worker’s satisfaction. As stated
here, There is also a strong connection between being satisfied at their job and their performance
(Gu and Chi, 2009). This gives the objectives and questions to answer:

According to a poll done by The Gallup Organization in 2004, it showed that employees at the
bottom 25% had lower sales, more issues with customers and increased staff turnover compared
to those who had the top 25% who had more positive scores. This raises a question on why is
happening. This brings problems within the company and outside the company. According to
Kimberlee Leonard, when an employee does not perform efficiently, customers feel that the
company is apathetic to their needs, and will look for assistance from somewhere else.

Companies should seek to engage employees. Employee engagement is an “emergent

working condition and a positive cognitive, emotional and behavioral state directed toward
organizational outcomes” (Shuck and Wollard, 2009). Through these activities, this helps the
employees become more committed and helpful to the company as well as producing positive
outcomes. Engaging employees through company activities and examining them every once in a
while to survey them on their current situation in their position will help assess the relationship of
their satisfaction and their job performance.
