RESPONDENTS’ PERCEPTION
OF MAGUINDANAO AFTER
THE 2009 MASSACRE

ABSTRACT

Mass Media influenced people’s mind, thus, it has a social responsibility.


This paper examines the second level agenda setting on the issue of the
Maguindanao 2009 massacre and its effects on the respondents. It made
used of a researcher-made questionnaire which was validated by experts
and has gone through reliability testing. The study shows that through
media coverage of an event the public will develop an opinion about the
event based on the type of coverage the news gives.

INTRODUCTION

The pictures in people’s minds about the outside world are significantly
influenced by the mass media, both what those pictures are about and
what those pictures are. The agenda-setting effects of the mass media also
have significant implications beyond the pictures created in people’s heads.
News is not only just the facts, but also the rhetoric messages influencing
how readers and viewers perceive reality.

This study was conducted to assess the second level agenda setting and
its effects on the respondent’s perception of Maguindanao after the 2009
Massacre. Specifically, it sought to find out the profile of the respondents,
in terms of sex, type of community they came from and the type of high
school they attended. It also aimed to determine the level of perception
of the respondents about Maguindanao in terms of the three variables.
Moreover, it tried to determine if there is a significant relationship and
significant difference on the respondents’ perception about Maguindanao
in terms of the three variables.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This study made used of the descriptive-correlation research. This


study is descriptive because it describes the respondents’ perception
regarding Maguindanao after the 2009 Massacre as presented in the
agenda-setting and framing of the television news. It is correlation because
it tests the relationship between the four variables and the respondents’
perception as influenced by the second level agenda setting and framing
about Maguindanao.

This study made used of the researcher made survey questionnaires in


collecting the data. The survey questionnaire was validated and reliability
tested. The questionnaire was composed of two parts: the first part is about
the profile of the respondents and the second part is comprised of questions
that assessed the respondents’ perception regarding Maguindanao after
the 2009 Massacre as presented in the agenda-setting and framing of the
television news.

Table 1 shows that the respondents agree on what the news representing
regarding Maguindanao after the 2009 massacre. Respondents’ perception
is not dependent on gender, the type of community they came from and the
type of school they attended.

CONCLUSIONS

Most of the respondents for this study were female. Majority of them
were coming from urban communities and there were more respondents
who graduated from sectarian secondary school. Furthermore, there were no
significant differences on the respondent’s perception about Maguindanao
in terms of the three variables namely their gender, the type of community
they came from and the type of high school they attended. In addition,
there was no significant relationship between the respondent’s perception
about Maguindanao in terms of the three variables aforementioned.
