Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology B.Sc. Eng. Honours Degree End Semester Examination Year 3, Semester 1 (2017) CE 3022 — Structural Design II Duration: 2 Hours Instructions to Candidates: © This paper has Three Questions. * Answer ALL questions. © Calculators are allowed. © Questions DO NOT carry equal marks. Marks allocation is indicated next to each question and part. * This paper contains 3 pages including the cover page. Question 1 (Total 35 marks) A slab has several panels each with a size of 4 m x 5 m. The design life of the structure is 50 years. It is recommended to consider outdoor exposure without Chlorides. This slab is reinforced with 10 mm diameter steel bars having a yield strength of 500 MPa. The loading from finishes and partitions on the slab can each be taken as 1 kN/m?. The imposed load on the slab is 3 kN/m?. 1. Recommend a suitable concrete cover to the slab reinforcement. (05 marks) Il. Recommend a practical concrete slab thickness. (05 marks) IIL. Determine the design load and the bending moment values for a typical interior slab panel. (10 marks) IV. _ Design a typical interior slab panel for critical bending moments including checks for minimum reinforcement, maximum spacing, and deflection. (15 marks) Question 2 (Total 40 marks) The reinforced concrete beam (Beam 1 in Fig. 1) shown in Fig, 2 has several continuous spans of 5 m each and is to carry an ultimate design load of 8 kN/m (with gx > qs). The slab thickness is 150mm. Use density of conerete = 25 KNav*, for = 30 Nm, and fx = 500 Nmm?. Assume 16mm dia, main bars and links of 10mm dia. bars). 1. Design the beam considering critical sagging and hogging moments and shear forces (cover= 35mm), The design should also include checks for minimum reinforcement, maximum reinforcement, minimum spacing, shear, and deflection. (30 marks) I Draw the detailed reinforcement drawing (longitudinal and sections) for the beam, The detail should show all relevant parameters including minimum anchorage lengths and lap lengths. Use cover = 40 mm, fr = 30 MPa, fx = 500 Nmm’, and density of concrete = 25 KNm’. 1. Determine a suitable effective depth for the footing. (05 marks) IL Recommend the dimensions for the footing, (05 marks) Ul, Design the reinforcement for square pad footing. It is necessary to include checks for ‘minimum reinforcement, maximum spacing, and vertical line shear. (15 marks)
