Writing an article – useful tips

- Don’t copy out the task (use synonyms)


- A catchy title
- Involve the reader by using lively, chatty, semi-formal style. Don't sound too formal
- You can address the reader directly; you can ask one or two questions
o “I'm sure you'll agree that...”
o “Have you read about...”
- Use adjectives, adverbs, phrasal verbs, collocations, relative clauses, linkers.
- Give personal opinions; include descriptions, examples, stories etc. to support your views.

INTRODUCTION:
- Have you ever... - Can you imagine... - I must tell you about...
- You absolutely must... - I’m sure you’d agree...

2nd + 3rd PARAGRAPHS:


- express a strong opinion:
o It’s absolutely stunning / terrible o There’s nothing in the world like it
o I will never forget it

- Adding / developing ideas:


o For a start, ... secondly ... thirdly... finally... o Apart from that
o And then there’s the fact that o I must also mention
o On top of that o As if this wasn’t enough

- Giving examples:
o ... such as... o ... particularly... o ...like...

LAST PARAGRAPH: end with an interesting last sentence


- For me, / To me, - In my view
- Personally, I think / I find / I believe - One thing I love / I remember
- It seems to me - I’ll never forget...
