Introduction:
Natural resources (land, water, biodiversity, forest, lifestock and fisheries)-The very foundation
of human survival, progress and prosperity have been degrading fast and the unprecedented
pace of their erosion is one of the root causes of agrarian crisis that the country is facing. An
integrated crop-livestock-fish-biomass farming system to synergize natural resources
conservation, development and management must become the foundation for livelihood
security.
Objectives:
1.To analyse and document relationship between natural resources and livelihood
opportunities.

2.Community based management of natural resources and linking them to livelihood.

3. To relate natural resource management with primary source(agriculture) ,secondary(cattle

rearing, fishery and apiculture) and tertiary sources (educational excursions,eco-tourism site)
as livelihood.

4.To analyse the potential of organic farming and its long term advantages to producers and
consumers.

5.Promote livelihood practices which lead to sustainable lifestyles with security of

ecosystem.

6.Introduction of both genders to earn livelihood.

Methodology:

 Study design: Area and community.

 Study subjects:Natural resources, farmers
 Study Area: Sumiran krishi farm, barkheda
 Sample size: 15

 Study tool :Field visit, Questionnaire

 The Process: The identified area was visited and how the natural resources are
managed in concerned area was studied.Comprehensive management of
soil, land, water, biodiversity and livestock was seemed to be effectively managed
here.A questionnaire was given to people who were previously working in some other
land but now associated with this area.

 Observations and Results:

• The land was quite fertile and the utilization and management of natural resources
was well maintained. The crops were grown all year around and other than
agriculture, means of livelihood like cattle rearing, apiculture and fishing were
prevalent.
• Earlier, farmers used to work on lands where cultivation was done only in a particular
period of year. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides/insecticides were used and the
water resource was groundwater which was not available during summers and
winters. Along with this their wages were low and agriculture was the sole source of
income.
• However, value added products are not made and marketed.
• There is no intermediary agency between producer and consumer so farmers are
directly benefitted.
 Conclusion:
The persisting low income of farmers(the majority of Indian people) and their
intensifying indebtedness, suicides, increasing rural unemployment and declining
agricultural productivity and profitability(a 15% drop during the last ten years) can be
overcome by sustainable management of natural resources. The major emphasis is to
improve soil health , use of inputs based on internal raw materials and protective
irrigation. An experienced organization which has worked and incorporated all the
above can be a model for affected community. The present study thus can help to
ensure livelihood support to the rural population in the country by adopting the above
model.
