Scout Executive – Twin Valley Council, Mankato, Minnesota

Objective
Provide key volunteer and staff leadership to a dynamic and growing Boy Scout council as their Scout Executive, using
the full range of skills I have developed over the past 26 ½ years as a Scout professional.

Background
Through various positions in the Boy Scouts of America, I have gained experience managing both employees and
volunteers. I have successfully energized both district and council level volunteers toward a common goal and recruited
new volunteers to join the team. Conducted and given leadership to Friends of Scouting campaigns, capital campaign,
special events, and popcorn sales. Provided effective staff support to various council committees and board members
including membership, program, Venturing, council camporee, and Philmont contingent. I work with the Council
Board to oversee all aspects of council operations. I also have experience managing camp properties on a year-round
basis including summer camp operations.

Selected Achievements
Membership:
 Council had a 4.5% membership growth in 2018.
 Started 5 new Scouts BSA all girl troops from February 2019 to July 2019. 4 of 5 attended camp this summer.

Finance:
 Created a sporting clay special event with strong volunteer committee that have netted over $75,000 to Scouting
since 2017. Also revitalized the Mankato Values event that was a break-even event with approximately 30
attendees to a premier event that had over 200 attendees in 2019 and netted over $10,000 in income.
 Turned a negative council operating budget since 2012 around in year two having a balanced council operating
budget in 2017 and 2018. Also turned around a camping program that was losing $45,000 annually to a budget
surplus (not counting professional staff time or depreciation) in both 2017 and 2018.
 Have raised over $60,000 in 2019 for a bathroom and kitchen remodel at one of our council camps.
 Created a camp sponsorship program that raised $14,500 to support camp in 2019.
 Secured a grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation of $150,000 to fund a development director position for two
years.
 Created an adult Easter Egg Hunt fundraiser that had over 700 participants and raised over $5,000 the first year.
 Built a popcorn committee of 12 active members that drive the council popcorn sale. The 2019 popcorn kickoff has
over 180 youth and over 140 adults in attendance.

Program:
 Created a Scouts BSA Camping Committee from 0 in 2016 to 17 today. Worked with this committee to ensure
NCAP compliance, added camp programs, and took camp operations from a deficit of $45,000 to a surplus in both
2017 and 2018.
 Created a Cub Scout Resident Camping program in the council.

Volunteer Manpower:
 Have recruited 11 new board members in the Twin Valley Council, 10 of which remain active on the board. Four of
which have since become officers including the current council president.
 Built several council and district committees to improve finances and program including the council popcorn
committee, values event committee, sporting clay committee, Scouts BSA camping committee, and River Stone
district committee.

Employment History
Scout Executive: Twin Valley Council – December 1, 2015 – Present:
 Serve as the Chief Executive Officer for the Twin Valley Council serving 15 counties in South Central Minnesota.
 Achieved an operating budget surplus in both 2017 and 2018.
 Increased volunteer participation on the executive board and council committees.
 Increased council generated funds through foundations and special events.
 4.5% membership growth in 2018. Great kickoff for Scouts BSA starting 5 new units in first 5 months.
 Created and maintained an energetic social media campaign that generated 337,582 impressions in 2018 and is
running 71% YTD ahead of last year in 2019.

Director of Field Service: Heart of America Council – May 2012 – November 30, 2015:
 Supervise 27 field staff consisting of 2 Assistant Directors of Field Service, 8 District Directors, 3 Senior District
Executives, 12 District Executives, 1 Exploring Executive, and 1 new unit organizer
 Grew number of units in the Heart of America council 0.1% in 2013 and the number of packs by 1%. In 2014, grew
traditional units by 0.5% (+5), total units by 0.7% (+8), and number of packs by 0.4% (+2).
 Increased fall recruiting 2012 over 2013 and 2013 over 2014 recruiting 5,696 new youth.
 Increased Friends of Scouting giving by 5% from $1,252,614 to $1,315,800 since 2012.
 Improved program quality in Scoutreach programs from 2012 to 2014 resulting in increase in Cub Scout
advancement (4% to 40.1%), Cub Scout camping (0.8% to 17.5%), and Boy Scout camping (0.8% to 3.6%).

Director of Field Service: Great Lakes Council – October 2010 – May 2012:
 Lead 13 unit serving executives in all aspects of district operations along with Council Commissioner and Vice-
President of Operations.
 Created school night partnership with the Detroit Tigers that recruited more than 5,000 new Cub Scouts in 2011.
 Lead FOS team to increased FOS dollars by 11% from $568,491 (cash) to $633,093 (cash) in 2011 over 2010.

Field Director: Great Lakes Council – October 2009-October 2010:


 After the merger of the Clinton Valley Council and Detroit Area Council served as Field Director for the eastern
section and lead the council district reorganization and realignment.

Director of Field Service: Clinton Valley Council– October 2006 – October 2009:
 Managed a professional staff of eight unit serving executives, one para-pro, and six program aides. Serving 13,200
traditional youth.
 In 2008, 3 of 5 districts achieved Centennial Quality district. Districts had a 3% increase in Friends of Scouting
giving.

Field Director: Crossroads of America Council- January 2003-Ocbober 2006:


 Managed 6 professional staff, 2 support staff, and the Terre Haute Service Center.
 Served as staff advisor for the council membership committee.
 Section made quality section and 3 of 4 districts achieved quality district in 2004.
 The section serves 7,589 traditional youth and achieved a 3% balanced traditional membership increase in 2004,
raised $199,103 in FOS in 2005 which is a $45,133 (29%) increase over 2003, and netted a total of $342,186 to
council in popcorn increasing the net by $39,587 (13.1%).

District Director: Crossroads of America Council– June 2002- June 2004 (Also served as Field Director beginning January 2003):
 Managed the newly merged Wabash Valley Council. Supervised 2 professional staff, 2 support staff, and Terre
Haute Service Center.
 Conducted a $50,000 capital campaign and organized volunteer labor to remodel the Terre Haute Service Center.
 Successfully built a district committee to 25+ active members from scratch, rebuilt commissioner staff from 3 to 25
members, and recruited a Friends of Scouting team increasing revenues by $42,000 (259%).
 Through a volunteer committee, increased golf tournament revenues by $3,418 (29%) raising a total of $17,500.

District Director: Crossroads of America Council– June 2000-June 2002:


 Managed 2 professional staff and 2 districts.
 Organized a Friends of Scouting team of community leaders raising $47,391 increasing dollars by 15% ($6,544) over
2000; also raised $250,000 in major gifts campaign including a $75,000 gift.

Support Services Director: Great Rivers Council – November 1997-June 2000:


 Oversaw an annual camp budget of $150,000, making $9,500 more than budget.
 Increased camp attendance from 938 youth to 1,022 youth (8%).
 Oversaw a seasonal staff of 40 camp staff and 2 full time camp rangers.
