REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION WORK FOR PROPOSED

IIFT CAMPUS BUILDINGS AT MAIDANGARHI , NEW
DELHI.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROJECT

This soil investigation work , whose results

are being presented herewith , has been
carried out for the IIFT Campus Buildings being
proposed to be constructed by M/S N. B. C. C.
Authorities at their project site situated at
Maidangarhi , New Delhi.

A plan of the site is being enclosed indicating

the site boundaries and investigation points.

The proposed structures of this project

comprise of Administrative Block , Academic
Block , Auditorium Block and Hostel Block
buildings of upto six storeyed height with
single / double basement provision.

Topography of the site is undulating in nature.

1.2 AIM OF SOIL INVESTIGATION

Soil investigation has been conducted at the

site in order to evaluate the parameters
required for design of foundations. These
parameters are :

(a) Type of foundation on which the proposed

super structure will be supported.

(b) Depth of foundation , and

(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the found-

ing level.

To evaluate these parameters, various

engineering properties of the sub-soil have
been studied.
11350 2

1.3 SCOPE OF WORK

The stipulated scope of work comprised of

following:

a) Mobilisation of equipment and personnel to

the site and back.

b) Sinking boreholes ( 5 nos. ) in the subsoil

down to 35 m depth below G. L. in
all types of soil i.e. sand , silt and clay
as well as rocky strata , observing ground
water table levels ( if observed down to
the depth of exploration ) , conducting
required field and laboratory tests and
their analysis.

c) Preparation and submission of technical

report in three copies.

2. INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED

2.1 INSITU TESTS

BH 1 , BH 2 and BH 5 have been progressed from

general ground level whereas starting points'
levels of BH 3 and BH 4 are about 3 m and 1 m
below general ground level.

Locations of field testing points have been

marked at the site as per the directions
of the project engineers. These locations
have been designated as BH 1 to BH 5 in
this report.

2.1.2 DRILLING IN ROCK

In view of the presence of refusal strata at

shallow depths, rock drilling operations have
been conducted down to various depths below the
existing top ground level in BH 1 and BH 2
locations as per directions of Engineer-in-
charge.

Boreholes were progressed in the

sub - strata with the help of hydraulic diamond
drilling operations. Values of core recovery
and Rock Quality Designation were noted down
to the respective termination depths in two
boreholes.

2.1.2.1 WATER TABLE

Water table was not encountered down to

the respective termination depths below
existing ground level in the five boreholes.

3. OBSERVATIONS

Following points are observed from results

obtained :

(a) Filled up zones were encountered down to

depths ranging from 1.00 m to 5.00 m in
the five boreholes whereas refusal strata
was encountered at depths ranging from
1.23 m to 6.07 m below the starting points'
levels of the five boreholes. Below the
above refusal levels , weathered / hard
rock strata was encountered down to the
termination depths of 15 m and 21 m in
BH 1 and BH 2 locations respectively.

(b) Bulk density values vary from 2.65 to 2.75

gms./cc. whereas porosity values vary from
0.13 to 0.20. Water absorption values
vary from 0.44 to 0.91 in the project site.

(c) Crushing strength values of rock samples ,

below the proposed founding level , vary
from 166 to 300 kg./sq.cm..

(d) The sub strata being of Rocky type in the

project site and in view of non presence
of water table down to the investigated
depth , there is no probabality of
liquefaction of the sub strata taking
place during earthquakes as per the
guidelines provided in IS 1893.

4. DISCUSSIONS

For designing the foundation system,

the following parameters are required :

(a) Suitable type of foundation on which the

proposed super-structure can be supported.

(b) Depth of these foundations, and

(c) Allowable bearing pressure at the founding

level corresponding to various footing sizes.

4.1 TYPE AND DEPTH OF FOUNDATION

Type of foundation to be adopted for a particular

structure depends upon the loading intensity at
the foundation level and the configuration of
loading points.

Considering the anticipated loads, proposed

Project buildings can be supported over isolated/
combined foundations placed at a depth of
6.0-6.5 m below the general ground level in case
of single basement provision and at a depth of
9.0-9.5 m below the general ground level in case
of double basements' provision.

All foundations will rest upon rock strata only.

4.2 ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE

Following criteria have been adopted for

evalution of allowable bearing pressure values :

1. Based upon softest rock core strength

2. Allowable bearing pressure recommendations

as per I.S. Code

3. Shear Failure Criterion.

11350 14

5. SAMPLE CALCULATIONS ( STRUCTURES WITH

SINGLE BASEMENT )

Type of foundation : Isolated / Combined

Depth of foundation : 600-650 cms. below the

the general top
ground level.

Width of foundation : 300 cms.

5.1 Based upon softest rock core strength

Weakest unconfined rock strength

below the proposed founding level = 166 kg./sq.cm

Considering maximum discontinuties i.e. 10 % , the

safe allowable bearing pressure can be worked out
considering a factor of safety of 10 on the above
strength.

Allowable bearing pressure = 16.6 kg./sq.cm

5.2 SHEAR FAILURE CRITERION

FOR GSF
Q = 0.4 ( 1.3 c Nc + 1.2 x q ( Nq - 1 )
+ 0.30 r B Nr )
FOR LSF
Q = 0.4 (2/3 x 1.3 c Nc + 1.2 x q ( Nq - 1 )
+ 0.30 r B Nr )

Cohesion , c = 0.00 Kg/sq.cm.

Angle of shearing resistance , O = 35 degrees

Bearing capacity factors

GSF :
Nc = 46.12 , Nq = 33.30 , Nr = 48.03

LSF :
Nc = 20.96 , Nq = 10.86 , Nr = 11.18
11350 15

Overburden density , r = 2.00 gms./cc.

Shear strength (GSF), Q(GSF) = 5.01 kg./sq.cm.

Shear strength (LSF), Q(LSF) = 1.28 kg./sq.cm.

Shear Strength (Intermediate)= 3.14 kg./sq.cm.

Gross Shear Strength = 3.24 kg./sq.cm.

5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS

Adopt , Qgross = 3.24 kg./sq.cm.

say 3.25 kg./sq.cm.

Similiar analysis has been conducted for various

widths of foundations at the recommended founding
levels.

Based upon the same , the recommendations are

being provided as follows :
11350 16

6. RECOMMENDATIONS

II. Depth of foundation : 600-650 cms. below

the general top
ground level.

foundation widths at various levels :

Width of foundation 300 350 400

(cms.)
Allowable Bearing
Pressure
( kg./ sq. cm.) 3.25 3.60 3.95

6.2 STRUCTURES WITH DOUBLE BASEMENT

I. Type of foundation : Isolated / Combined

II. Depth of foundation : 900-950 cms. below

the general top
ground level.

All foundations will rest upon rock strata

only.

III. Allowable Bearing Pressure

Following gross allowable bearing pressure values

can be adopted corresponding to various
foundation widths at various levels :

Width of foundation 300 350 400

(cms.)
Allowable Bearing
Pressure

NOTES :

(a) For intermediate foundation widths , bearing

capacity values may be linearly interpolated.

(b) In case , it is desirable to have

design parameters at any levels other than
recommended in this report , the case may
be referred back to the consultants for
analysis.
