Bee pollen represents a huge reservoir of biologically active compounds, which is why
the last time presents a permanent interest for scientific studies in various fields such as the
biological sciences, food industry, medicine, pharmacy and even the protection of the environment
through the possibility of biomonitoring the environment via the Apis Mellifera and products
derived from it.
For this purpose, 5 samples of poliflor bee pollen were harvested from different regions
of Romania (Mureș, Sălaj, Cluj, Dolj, Maramureș).
Palinological analysis was performed to identify floral origin of samples after a previous
sorting them according to color, after which the concentrations have been identified: Pb, Cd, Cu,
Ni, Mn, Fe, K, Mg, Na and Ca by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and amino acid profile,
respectively through the technique of chromatography coupled to detector (LC-MS).
A number of 26 free amino acids were identified and quantified in bee pollen samples:
ARG, GLN, SER, ASN, 1 MHIS, 3 MHIS, GLY, THR, GABA, SAR, ABA, ORN, MET, PRO,
LYS, ASP, HIS, VAL, GLU, TRP, LEU, PHE, ILE, TYR, ALA HYP.
The results obtained were correlated by using the software Epi InfoTM 7 (CDC, USA).
Differences between means were analyzed using Anova test, so a value of p is less than 0.05 is
considered significant statistically.
Analyzing those five geographic areas and intake of mineral elements, it can be
concluded that: Dolj county is a more polluted geographic area in comparison with other, and bee
pollen consumption with high levels of lead it can cause poisoning leading to anemia, brain vessels
affection, chronic nephritis, hypertension, decreased learning capacity of children, changes in the
behavior of newborns and young children (subject to the influence of lead through the mother's
body during the period of intrauterine development and lactation) as, for example, aggression,
impulsivity, hyperactivity (Popescu, 2010).
