SUPERSTAR LEADERS

The questionnaire that was created to assess the organizational culture of DKH is segregated
in terms of three fundamental aspects of Fiedler’s Theory:
1. Leader-member relation
2. Task structure
3. Position power
The detailed version of the questionnaire slip up can be found in the attached excel sheet.

The result of the situational analysis

is presented in the graph. Dr
Shekhawat and the doctors in his
team score less in the leader-
member relations. However, the
score is higher in position power
and task structure. The category of
the situation is
Leader Member Relation: Poor
Task Structure: High
Position Power: Strong
This relates to category V

The next step is to determine the type of leadership of Dr Shekhawat. Least Preferred
Coworker questionnaire is used to determine the leadership style of Dr Shekhawat. Each of
the items of LPC is scored on the basis of evidences from the case. The total score of LPC
exercise for Dr Shekhawat is 56. This indicates that the leadership style of Dr Shekhawat is
Task oriented type.

The task oriented leaders perform well in very favorable situations that is represented by
Categories I, II, III, VIII. Relationship oriented leaders perform better in moderate situations
that are represented by Categories IV, V, VI, VII. Since, Dr Shekhawat’s task oriented
leadership is prevalent in a situation that belongs to moderately favorable (category V), it
becomes a mismatch of the leadership style to the situation. This might be the reason behind
the high attrition rate among the doctors who don’t realize that their long term goal can
never be achieved at DKH under Dr Shekhawat’s leadership.

Since Fiedler’s theory is backed up by the assumption that a person’s leadership style cannot
be changed, Dr Shekhawat can try to improve the leader-member relations score by showing
empathy towards his employees and gaining his team members trust back. Once he is able to
achieve this, the situation would become Category I that is a favorable situation where the
task oriented leaders perform well.
