Describe southwest Airlines’ Strategy. What are the most important strategic choices?

The most important strategy within southwest airline is the treatment given to their employees.
Whenever a new employee joins the company unique kind of orientation is given to him known as new
hire celebration.

Southwest consider employees opinion on various matters and they are encouraged at all levels. For
example, pilot looked for ways to conserve fuel during flights, employees proposed designs for ice
storage equipment that reduce time and cost etc.

Another important strategy of southwest is stated in this statement “we manage in good times so that
our company and our people can be job secure and prosper through bad times.” Working upon this
strategy they survived through 2008-09 recession and September 11 attacks.

In flights employees are encouraged to be creative on how they deliver announcement to the
passengers, such as singing messages. Once the CEO herb Kelleher served in flight snacks dressed as the
Easter bunny. Therefore, employees are highly motivated.

Other strategies which helped southwest in becoming the U.S airlines Leader includes their low fares,
frequent flight point to point, the hub and spoke approach which helps in cost saving as well, short haul
trips, and on time services with or without luxuries it means booking are on first come first serve basis.
They also serve tickets on internet to facilitate their customers.

Southwest treat its customers far beyond the norm which had its own name called Positively
Outrageous Service that is why people trust Southwest.
