EXPLORE: Lesson Description – Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions: (2-3

class periods)

• After the students have discussed and explored the idea of why each animal could or
could not live in a home, they will apply that knowledge towards their own research of an
animal and their habitat.
• Students will have the option to either work with a partner or individually.
• After the students have decided who they are working with or individually, the students
will then pick an animal to explore.
• Students will have multiple sources of media to explore and gather their information,
some examples but not limited to are:
o Websites (NatGeo.)
o Books (Picture books)
o Articles
o Videos (Youtube)
o Interactive websites
o Access to Computers
• After the students have a good understanding of what resources they could use, students
will begin to compile information regarding their animal
o Students will refer to the anchor chart created on day one to help guide them in
finding specific research. Some examples of what they need are:
§ Climate
• Temperature
• Weather
• Humidity
• Seasons
§ Predator vs. Prey relationships
§ Food and Water Sources
§ Landscape
• Amount/ size of land animal needs
• What kind of plants, if any, should be in the habitat
• Hunting territory

o Students can do further investigation about their animals that they believe will be
beneficial towards their research besides the criteria above.
