Quality management

In order to understand the
trends in standardization …

… it’s good to know the

status quo

Dr. Eduard Neufeld | neufeld@fogra.org 11

ISO 12647 makes the difference
• Every production step has its own error tolerance
• Several iterations (“trial an error”) to achieve expected quality
• Changes in the system (ink, substrate, plate, etc.) are difficult to predict
Challenges

Inefficient work and customer communication,

Quality deficits

• Describes tolerances for all production steps

• Defines quality of printed product

ISO 12647

Clear interfaces and responsibilities: creation, prepress and press;

Quick, reliable and reproducible results;
Customer satisfaction

Fogra and bvdm have developed “ProcessStandard Offsetprinting” in order to

supplement the standard by all necessary descriptions and control devices

Dr. Eduard Neufeld | neufeld@fogra.org 12

It works in reality

More than • Fogra has certified more than 400 printing companies world wide according
400 printing to ProcessStandard Offset (PSO)
• Inks, papers etc. are tested on a daily basis to ensure compliance
companies
certified
• Fogra has established a world wide partner programme

• Print buyers in Europe often expect PSO compliant production

Print buyers • Adherence to schedules
• Quality assurance
in Europe
• Constant repetition of jobs
ask for
• Uniform colour reproduction at different print products
PSO
• Less coordination time onsite
compliance
• Some have even acquired the PSO language to specify quality, e.g.
Siemens, BMW

Many printing companies at first aimed at a good selling proposition,

but then also discovered an effective lever for cost reduction
