ABSTRACT
The chicken farm workers in the village of Silebo-Lebo, Deli Serdang District
use working hours exceeds the normal working hours which have been determined in
Indonesia is 8 hours/day and 40 hours a week. The amount of labor is not comparable
with the work on the chicken farms that takes the work day and night, there has been no
shift between day and night. Caloric intake of the workers has not been considered
either by the worker himself or by the breeder.
The purpose of this explanatory research study was to analyze the influence of
work load (working hours, kinds of activities) and calorie intake on the nutritional
status of the workers of chicken farm in Silebo-lebo Village, Deli Serdang District in
2011. The population of this study were all of the 67 workers working in the chicken
farms in Silebo-lebo Village, and 58 of them were selected to be the samples for this
study. Work load was measured by measuring the working hours and kinds of activities
done by the workers, the calorie intake was measured through a 24-hour food recall,
and the nutritional status of the workers was measured by using the indicator of body
mass index.
The results of this study showed that there were significant influence of work
load (working hours, kinds of activities) and caloric intake on the nutritional status of
the chicken workers (p<0.05), since food consumption of the most workers were still
under the adequacy of calories intake of the workers for working load on the chicken
farms, so that it was not enough to raise the nutritional status of the chicken workers.
While controlling the chicken workers, the breeders are suggested to provide
them food or to carry out the activities of providing milk and noodle gradually until
the completion of breeding period. The workers are requested to eat three meals a day,
plus a snack between meals to meet caloric intake in accordance with the workload.
Snack, milk and noodle which are provided by breeders should be consumed by the
workers themselves.
