1. India ranked at 34th position on world travel and tourism competitiveness index
• According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) report, India has jumped 6 places to claim
34th spot on world Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2019.
• The WEF report shows, over 1.5 crore international tourists arrived in India while the share of
travel and tourism industry was 3.6 per cent and that of industry employment was 5.1 per cent.
• Spain tops the ranking index followed by France and Germany.
• Other countries in the top 10 include Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia,
Italy, Canada, and Switzerland.
3. ‘Statue of Unity’, Mumbai’s Soho House among Time’s 100 greatest places in the world
• The 597-ft tall ‘Statue of Unity’ in Gujarat and Mumbai’s Soho House have been featured by the
Time magazine in its second annual list of the 2019 World’s greatest places, in a compilation of
100 new and newly “noteworthy destinations.
• The ‘Statue of Unity’, the world’s tallest statue, is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,
independent India’s first home minister as well as deputy prime minister.
• Soho House Mumbai is Asia’s first Soho House that puts a local spin on the “formula that has
allowed Nick Jones’ members-only clubs to blossom across the US and Europe”.

6. Mumbai at 45th spot and Delhi at 52nd in World Safe Cities Index 2019
• According to a report of Economist Intelligence Unit, Mumbai has been ranked as the 45th
safest city on the Safe Cities Index (SCI) 2019, while Delhi stood at the 52nd position.
• Tokyo taking the top spot, while Singapore and Osaka came 2nd and 3rd in the list.
9. India is the 46th highest risk country in the world: Water Stress Index 2019
• According to the Water Stress Index 2019, formulated by London-based risk analytics firm
Verisk Maplecroft, India is the 46th highest risk country in the world.
• 11 out of India’s 20 largest cities face an ‘extreme risk’ of water stress and 7 are in the ‘high
risk’ category. Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nashik, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Indore
are among the cities facing ‘extreme risk’.
• Chennai is the “tip of the iceberg” for India’s water-stressed cities.
10. Global Innovation Index 2019 – On July 24, 2019, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and
Railways, Piyush Goyal launched the 12th Edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) for the year
2019 in New Delhi.
• The theme of the 2019 GII is “Creating Healthy Lives – The Future of Medical Innovation”.
• Global Index is published annually by Cornell University, INSEAD (Institute Européen
d’Administration des Affaires) and the United Nations World Intellectual Property Organisation
(WIPO) and GII Knowledge Partners.
• It ranked 129 economies based on 80 indicators, ranging from intellectual property filing rates
to mobile-application creation, education spending and scientific and technical publications.
• The headquarters of World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ranking
• India was ranked 52nd in 2019 with the score 36.58 out of 100 from 57th position in 2018.
• Top 3 countries – Switzerland, Sweden and United States of America.

11. Global Multidimensional Poverty Index -
• The MPI provides a comprehensive and in-depth picture of global poverty – in all its dimensions
– and monitors progress towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 – to end poverty in all
its forms.
• The global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is published by United Nation Development
Programme (UNDP)
Key findings
• Across 101 countries, 1.3 billion people—23.1 percent—are multidimensionally poor.
• Two-thirds of multidimensionally poor people live in middle-income countries.
• One in every three children (under the age of 10) and every second child below the age of 18
years is multidimensionally poor in the world.
• About 34% of the world’s children and 17.5% adults covered under MPI survey are
multidimensionally poor.
• One adult in six is multidimensionally poor compared with one child in three, hence children are
more prone to multidimensional poverty than adults.
Indian Scenario
• India’s MPI value reduced from 0.283 in 2005-06 to 0.123 in 2015-16.
• India has lifted 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016, recording the fastest
reductions in the multidimensional poverty index.
• India and Cambodia has reduced their MPI values the fastest among the 10 selected countries for
which changes over time were analysed.
• Jharkhand has reduced the incidence of poverty at a faster pace than other regions (reduced the
incidence of multidimensional poverty from 74.9% in 2005-06 to 46.5% in 2015-16).
• India (along with Ethiopia and Peru) significantly reduced deprivations in all 10 indicators, namely
nutrition, sanitation, child mortality, drinking water, years of schooling, electricity, school
attendance, housing, cooking fuel and assets.
• MPI reduced from 640 million people (55.1%) in 2005-2006 to 369 million people (27.9%) in 2015-
16.
12. Chandigarh best performing state in the field of education in the Performance Grading
Index 2017-18
• Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) informed that in the Performance Grading
Index 2017-18, Chandigarh was ranked best among States and Union territories (UTs) in the
field of education.
• The Index ranked the states on the basis of 5 parameters including learning outcomes and
quality, access, infrastructure and facilities, equity and governance process. 36 States/ UTs
were ranked in the Index.
• Other Rankings: Kerala was ranked second followed by Gujarat (3), Haryana (4), Tamil Nadu
(5), Punjab (7), Rajasthan (8), Delhi (9).
• Least Rankings: Arunachal Pradesh (36), Nagaland (35) and Meghalaya (34) were the least
performing states.
• Literacy: Kerala had the highest literacy rate followed by Lakshadweep and Mizoram.
13. Public Affairs Index 2018: Kerala Best Governed State, Bihar Worst
• Kerala is the best governed state in the country, according to a survey released by a Bengaluru
think-tank, Public Affairs Centre.
• As per the report, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Gujarat are among the top five states
delivering good governance.

• Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha ranked the lowest on the index,
indicating higher social and economic inequalities.
• Among smaller states – with the population less than two crore – Himachal Pradesh topped the
list of states with good governance, followed by Goa, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.
• Meghalaya performed the worst in this list. Manipur, Nagaland, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir
were the other poor performers.
• This year’s index also measured how child-friendly each state is. Kerala, Himachal Pradesh and
Mizoram topped this index.
16. Money in Swiss banks: India ranked 74 – India has ranked at 74th place in terms of money
parked by its citizens with Swiss banks by the end of 2018.
• While with maximum holdings, UK (United Kingdom) has remained top in the list.
• The report is compiled by the Swiss National Bank (SNB).
• India was ranked 73rd in 2018.
• The US remains on the second with CHF 144 billion accounts 10.3% of foreign funds.

17. Maharashtra ranks first in NITI Aayog’s AMFFR Index – Maharashtra achieves first rank in
NITI Aayog launched “Agricultural Marketing and Farmer Friendly Reforms Index (AMFFRI)”.
• Gujarat secured the second rank with a score of 71.5 out of 100, followed by Rajasthan and
Madhya Pradesh.
• The index ranks states based on the degree of reforms they have undertaken in agricultural
marketing.
• AMFFRI has a score that can have minimum value “0” implying no reforms and maximum value
“100” implying complete reforms in the selected areas.

18. NITI Aayog’s Health Index 2019 - Kerala took the top spot among larger states for overall
performance on health indicators in a NITI Aayog report, followed by Andhra Pradesh and
Maharashtra.
• Uttar Pradesh is the worst state in the index.
Key points
• Gujarat, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh stood at fourth, fifth and sixth spots.
• The ranking was done under three categories -- larger states, smaller states and Union
territories (UTs) -- to ensure comparison among similar entities.
• In terms of annual incremental performance among the larger states, Haryana, Rajasthan
and Jharkhand are the top-three states.
• Among the smaller states, Mizoram ranked first in overall performance, while Tripura and
Manipur were the top-two states in terms of incremental performance.
• Among the UTs, Chandigarh ranked first in overall performance, while Dadra and Nagar Haveli
improved the most.
• Niti Aayog member Vinod Kumar Paul said the Union government should spend 2.5 per cent of
gross domestic product on health.
• Kerala and Tamil Nadu have already reached the 2030 SDG target for neonatal mortality rate
(NMR), which is 12 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births.
• The report has been prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
with technical assistance from the World Bank.
• The second round of the Health Index took into account the period 2015-16 (base year) to
2017-18 (reference year).
21. IIT Bombay has emerged the country’s best university: QS Rankings
• IIT Bombay has emerged the country’s best university for the second consecutive year in
the 2019 QS World University Ranking.
• Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was named the world’s best for a record eighth
consecutive year.

• Twenty-three Indian institutes feature in the sixteenth edition of the QS World University
Ranking in which IIT Bombay (152), IIT Delhi (182) and Indian Institute of Science
Bangalore (184) are ranked in the global top 200.
• The ranking is produced by global higher education consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds, QS
ranks the world’s top 1,000 universities.

• India ranked at 43rd position in the most competitive economy in the world.
• In 2018 India was ranked at 44th place.
• Singapore has grabbed the top position.
• Hong Kong SAR is in second position and US has slipped to the third place in 2019.
• The ranking is compiled by International Institute for Management Development (IMD).
23. Global Startup Ecosystem – India was ranked 17th position among 100 countries.
• It was released by Startup Blink.
• The report ranks countries based on the strength of its startup ecosystem.
• China was ranked 27th.
• Bangalore, New Delhi, and Mumbai were the top cities in the Indian startup ecosystem.
• Top three countries are: United States, United Kingdom and Canada.
25. WEF Global Energy Transition Index – India rank 76th on a global energy transition index.
• The report stated that India is amongst the countries with high pollution levels and has a
relatively high CO2 intensity in its energy system.
• Sweden remains on the top and is followed by Switzerland and Norway in the top three.
• The index is compiled by Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF).

• Sweden has topped the rankings followed by Singapore and the US.
• The Inclusive Internet Index 2019 was prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) for

• The ‘Inclusive Internet’ score was based on the scores of availability, affordability, relevance
and readiness categories.

• China and Pakistan, in a list of 180 countries, lagged far behind than India at 87th and 117th
position respectively.
31. Democracy Index 2019: The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Democracy
Index which ranks 167 countries by 60 indicators across five broad categories.
• Top 3 countries in the list are – Norway, Iceland and Sweden.
• Australia and New Zealand are the only “full democracies” in the entire Asia-Pacific region
• India was at the 41st place with a score of 7.23/10 and was placed in the flawed democracies
category.
33. World Happiness Report 2019 – India is ranked 140th out of 156 nations.
• The World Happiness Report was released by the Sustainable Development Solutions
Network for the United Nations.
• For the second consecutive year, Finland topped the list.
• Denmark ranked second followed by Norway.
• Pakistan ranked 67th, Bhutan 95th, China 93rd, Bangladesh 125th, and Sri Lanka 130th
while South Sudan ranked last in the World Happiness Report.
34. India ranks 16th in terms of Highest Number of impacted Species in Hotspots – A recent
study published in PLOS Biology found that human impacts on species occur across 84% of the earth’s
surface and India ranks 16th in such impacts, with 35 species impacted on an average.
• Malaysia ranks 1st among the countries with the highest number of impacted species (125).
• Southeast Asian tropical forests, including those in India’s Western Ghats, Himalaya, and
north-east, are among the ‘hotspots’ of threatened species.
• However, these very areas are also ‘cool-spots’ (the world’s last refuges where high numbers
of threatened species still persist).

2019 index.
• The World Bank on October 31, 2018 released the Doing Business Report 2019 titled as ‘Doing
Business 2019: Training for Reform’, assessing and ranking countries on the basis of ease of
doing business in the year 2018.
• In its annual 'Doing Business' 2019 report, the World Bank said India has improved on six of the
10 parameters on starting and doing business in a country.
• The biggest improvements have been in the indicators related "construction permits" and
"trading across borders.
• Last year, India ranked at 100th position.
• The top 3 economies in the ease of doing business rankings are New Zealand, Singapore,
and Denmark.
