“The strangest animal”

Summer vacation was over. It was time for children to go back to
school. The evening before classes started, Fred prepared all the things
he needed for school. The next morning, everyone was up early. Father
brought Fred to school.
On the first day of school, the teacher asked each one how he or
she spent his or her vacation. Fred was very eager to share.
“All right, Fred, how did you spend your vacation?” asked Miss Ortiz.
“We went to Boracay. We had a nice time swimming on the white
beach. What I can’t forget were those little animals I saw in caves and
trees. Mother told me they were bats. They looked like mice to me,
except they had wings that looked like a duck’s feet. I also saw them
hanging upside down on trees,” said Fred.
“I haven’t seen one but I’ve read about them,” said Allan. “They
sleep in caves where it’s very dark during the day. In early evenings,
they come out and fly to look for food. They love to eat insects,” Allan
added.
“How do they catch insects?” asked Mila.
“A bat puts its head into the wings and the insect is wrapped about
by its webbed wings before it is gobbled up by the bat,” answered Miss
Ortiz.
“Mother said bats are animals. They are also mammals,” said Fred.
“That means a bat gives birth to a live young and feeds it on milk
from its breasts. Mother bats nurse their babies. Such animals are
mammals,” answered Miss Ortiz.
“I’ve also read that bats can turn over in the air more quickly than
most birds, said Allan. “They keep away from some of their enemies that
way,” he added.
“I think bats are the strongest animals I have ever seen,” said Fred.
