Note PlantLIFE Vision operates in the Windows NT (4.0 or greater), Windows 2000, Windows
98, or Windows XP environments, ONLY!
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
You must have a CD drive or Internet access for product installation. The following prerequisites
are required to run Bentley Plant 2004 Edition applications.
Before you install the Bentley PlantLIFE Vision software, you should confirm that you have
adequate hardware and software capabilities to install and use the product.
Note In response to user requests to have the application on-line help formatted in a manner
that can be referenced away from a setting in which the actual software is installed we
will now provide the help in an Adobe® Acrobat® Reader PDF formatted manual after
each major release. These will be provided in PDF format to enable users to print as
many copies of this information as desired. These files will be generated in a timely
manner after each release from the on-line help and made available for download from
the http://docs.bentley.com web page.
All applications provide a Help > Contents menu selection, which will display the relevant help for
that application. In most instances, primary application help may also be directly launched via the
Programs > Bentley > Plant 2004 > Help Files folder in your Windows Start menu.
HELP/DOCUMENT UPDATES
The Contents page of PlantLIFE Vision help files contains an Update Now button. If you have a
connection established with an Internet provider, press this button to access the
http://docs.bentley.com web page. PlantLIFE Vision Help and Tutorials are tracked by the build
date that displays in the Title bar of each help/tutorial window. Compare the build date on your
existing file with the build date of this file in the download area of the Bentley web site to
determine if a newer version is available.
Downloads will be provided in the form of self-extracting zip files. When you download an update,
simply save the file to the directory where the old files resides, then run the downloaded
executable. For example, if you download an update for the VISION 2004 Edition help file
VISION.CHM, the downloaded file will be named VISION2004.EXE. Save the file to your
directory where the existing VISION.CHM help file resides, then run the VISION2004 to overwrite
your existing help file.
+ Project Setup: This area of the help describes the various project operations modes, and
provides procedures for performing the most common project configuration tasks. The tools
provided to upgrade/update from previous versions of AutoPLANT are also covered.
+ New Features: Provides a list of version-by-version links, to the new features and
modifications to the PlantLIFE Vision application.
+ Getting Started: Provides an introduction to the interface, and provides a description on how to
best use the help system.
+ Menu Command Reference: This folder is organized to closely match the structure of the Vision
main menu. This should enable you to quickly locate help on a specific menu option. In
general, the help for each command resides in a separate folder under the menu name folder
where it exists in the menu. Many command folders also contain a How To sub folder,
which includes a set of procedure topics that describe how to use that command.
+ Tab Reference: Provides a graphical interface to enable you to navigate through the tab system
to access a help topic for a specific tab.
+ Toolbar Command Reference: The Toolbar Command Reference help area provides a
description of the toolbar options available with links to the main help topic for each of these
options.
+ Technical Support: Contains information on how and when to contact our Technical Support
staff. This section includes telephone and fax numbers, as well as a live web link to the
Bentley web site for the latest support information.
PDF files may be printed by selecting File > Print, then selecting the range of pages to print.
FEATURES
PlantLIFE Vision provides an easy-to-use environment to manage critical plant data and
documentation. The tree-like user interface enables you to quickly navigate to a specific
component to view operating data and associated documentation. PlantLIFE Vision and the
Bentley Process & Instrumentation Workgroup and Bentley Plant Design Workgroup share a
common relational database model for storage of all plant data including process equipment, lines,
valves and instrumentation. Changes made to a P&ID are immediately available through the
PlantLIFE Vision interface. By sharing a common relational database, errors and data maintenance
costs associated with duplicate data are virtually eliminated.
PlantLIFE Vision does more then simply manage plant data. It displays the relationship between
the various components within the plant. Selecting a process vessel in the user interface instantly
displays a list of nozzles and lines connected to the vessel. Selecting a line displays all in-line
components, including valves and instrumentation, as well as branch connections and downstream
equipment. Need to see the data associated with a piece of equipment? Simply select the
Properties tab to view the data stored in the central relational database.
DATA MANAGEMENT
PlantLIFE Vision allows you to manage plant data for the lifecycle of your plant. All
documentation and data developed with the Bentley Plant Design applications in the construction
phase is seamlessly imported into PlantLIFE Vision for plant operations and maintenance. This
eliminates the time-consuming and error prone process of completing a manual take-off of your
drawing data in order to update your plant data.
DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT
PlantLIFE Vision provides the document management tools required to address the unique needs
of process plants. With PlantLIFE Vision a document can be electronically linked to any
component record. Selecting the component in the graphical user interface automatically displays
the list of associated documents. Select the document from the list and it is automatically displayed
for viewing. With PlantLIFE Vision it is easy to locate all documents associated with a particular
tag number.
All plant documentation is maintained under revision control within PlantLIFE Vision. The archive
function ensures that only the most currently issued document is available for viewing. Only plant
personnel with the appropriate permissions may checkout, update and archive an original
document. Built-in audit tracking functionality maintains a permanent history of all document
changes and the personnel that made the changes.

OVERVIEW 6-2
OVERVIEW
This chapter provides an overview of the PlantLIFE supplemental application. This application can
be launched directly from the Windows Start menu. This application ships with its own context-
sensitive on-line help that provides detailed explanations of every available feature and function.
This help file may be displayed by selecting Help > Contents from the application’s menu.
The Contents page of every primary application help file contains an Update Now button. If you
have a connection established with an Internet provider, press this button to access the
http://docs.bentley.com web page where you can then locate the latest documentation for Bentley
applications.
Help file builds are tracked by the build date that displays in the title bar of each help system
window. Compare the build date on your existing help file with the build date of the file available
from the download area of the web site to determine if a newer version is available.
Knowledge Manager extracts tag information from all AutoCAD drawing types including, but not
limited to, P&IDs, Piping Orthographics, Piping Isometrics, Single Line Diagrams, and Loop
Drawings. The associated documents list is automatically built for each tag number, providing a
convenient method to locate and view the various drawing types that reference a particular tag. In
addition, Knowledge Manager automatically keeps the project database up-to-date through
scheduled processing of new and revised drawing files. Knowledge Manager also contains a full
text search engine so that drawings can be located by any text contained within the file.
