GENERAL ENGLISH PROGRAM

LISTENING TIPS

When you listen for information or details and try to answer questions, here are some tips you
can follow to catch the answers.

 Read the questions first. You have to make sure you understand the questions.
 Underline the keywords of the questions and think of synonyms.
For example: Why did Alex choose a career as a nanny? The bold words are keywords
you might notice.
 Predict the answer before you listen if you have enough time.
 Listen to the recording by finding the keywords (or synonyms of the words) you
underlined.
*Remember that what you hear is not always the answer so listen carefully.

How to improve your listening in general?

 Build the habit of listening to native speakers every day. You can simply go to YouTube
and watch any videos you like to watch. For example, the video can be as simple as
America’s got Talent. REMEMBER TO WATCH SOMETHING YOU LIKE OR
ENJOY.
 Listening to English songs with lyrics can be very helpful. Try to sing along by looking at
the lyrics.
 Watching TV shows and movies in English is a good way to improve your English.
Remember to watch movie with subtitle.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Having habit is important to improve your English. You
just need to do it over and over again. If you cannot understand what that native speaker is
talking about today, listen to him talking again tomorrow or listen to other speaker talking.
Imagine if you do it 365 days year, you will definitely improve your listening skills. YOU
CAN DO IT!
