PERSONAL STATEMENT

Moving to a different country and learning how to master a second language has been a

challenge for myself. Spanish is the first language that I learned how to speak so at first it was

really hard for me to communicate with people in English out in the streets or any where I used

to go and that makes me feel scared sometimes because I didn’t know how to respond or ask

about anything to others. Also at school when the 100% percent of students speak English that

was something that made feel scared because many times I was being bullied for students

because they used to make fun of how I would talk or for not knowing how to talk in English so

it was this time when I first went to middle school in Los Angeles there were a bunch of kids

who would be always be skipping class or messing around with most of the students, they will

always tried to fight someone or bully somebody so one day I was in p.e class and a bunch of

guys walked up to the bench where I was sitting at and they started saying “ wassup foo do you

speak English “ it was my first year of school in America so I didn't know how to speak English

a lot enough to have a conversation with them so I just said “nope” and they all started talking to

each other and laugh at the same time so i knew they were laughing about me. I didn’t really

used to pay attention to them even though they would always tried to bully me. Time was flying

by and I was focusing on learning English everyday. I used to always go to my classes and try to

learn new stuff and I knew that if learned how to talk on english I was going to feel much more

comfortable and I also was going to be able to make friends and talk with the guys that were

always messing with me so then when english was making more sense to me and I was getting

more into it I was getting more comfortable and it was kinda easy for me to talk with my

teachers and other students but i had to practice it everyday, I was always listening to music in
English and I also was reading in English and trying to learn basic things all the time and that's

how now I can understand more english and I can communicate more with others and I'm still

improving it but I feel great when I had noticed that I can talk in English more now than 5 years

ago when I came to America. So it’s been 5 years since I left my country where I was raised until

I turned 13 years old , my life had changed a lot on this 5 years I feel like moving to a different

country had a big impact in my life in the way that I now have more opportunities and chances to

be successful in life.
