TOPIC: - FOCUS GROUP METHOD

Focus group is a group of typically 6-12 different kind of people who are brought together to
discuss on some topic. These kinds of discussions provide insights on how people think and
provide a deeper understanding of the phenomenon being studied. It is a form of qualitative
research in which non-numerical data is collected, that is opinions and thoughts of different
people are recorded. This methodology offers the researchers ‘a way of listening to people and
learning from them’.

Despite the fact that focus groups were initially developed as an academic research method,
since the 1950s they have become more synonymous with market research. However, the focus
group method has now been regaining more popularity among academic researchers in the health
and social sciences.

The following research will focus on how the focus group method is used as a way of research
and how we can be benefitted from it, its advantages and limitations, its history as well as the
current usage. The researcher will also be differentiating between the focus group method and
other methods of qualitative research.
