2.) What is the importance of organizational structure in an organization?

The purpose of an organization chart is to depict the skeletal structure of the practice, including the functional
relationships between, among, and within the specific components. An organization chart provides a point of
reference and improves the flow and direction of communications. It allows people to see how they fit in the big
picture, increases efficiency, and maintains a balance in the practice. Having an organizational structure in place allows
companies to remain efficient and focused.

The development of good structure for organizations has been a concern for managers throughout history.
Medical practices have both structure and process. The structure refers to the formal organization and the plans,
schedules, and procedures that hold it together. Structure is the instrument by which people formally organize
themselves to carry out a task. Process represents what actually goes on—what is done, how it is done, and the way
individuals or groups behave and carry out their perceptions of the assigned tasks. The structure can be seen as the
anatomy of a practice, and the process as the practice’s physiology.
3.) Identify the different type of hospital classification and give a brief description on each.

Hospitals can be categorized many different ways. For example, a hospital can be categorized by its size or by how it
receives its funding.

Size

One of the most basic ways to categorize hospitals is by size:

Small-sized hospital: less than 100 beds

Medium-sized hospital: between 100 - 500 beds

Large-sized hospital: more than 500 beds

Independent, System, or Network

Hospitals can be classified as either independent or part of a system or network.

Independent: hospitals that are independently owned and operated

System: multiple hospitals that work together and are run by a central office or administration

Network: a large group of medical facilities, hospitals, doctors, and insurance companies that all coordinate to deliver
medical care

There is a current trend for hospitals to join a system or network, rather than function as an independent unit.

Revenue Generation

Hospitals can be categorized by the way they generate revenue.

Not-for-profit hospitals: Any profits of the hospitals are given back to the hospital and used to cover things such as
services, salaries, or equipment.

For-profit hospitals: Profits are given to the shareholders of the hospital.

Teaching

Most hospitals are categorized as either teaching or non-teaching. Teaching hospitals are usually associated with a
medical school, perform medical research, and are often more likely to utilize the newest technologies and treatments.
Additionally, teaching hospitals often serve a higher percentage of poor patients (Medicaid, Medicare, and uninsured).

Teaching hospitals are associated with a medical school and are used to help educate future medical professionals.
