My customer asked me to become GFSI certi ed, what does that
mean for me?
This means that they would like you to be certi ed to a food safety standard (certi cation
scheme) that is recognized by GFSI. This gives you the freedom to select which food safety
standard to implement in your company as long as you select one from their list of options.

Once you select the standard, you would implement it in your company and then have a 3rd
party audit by a certi cation body. Upon successful completion of the audit, you will be granted
your certi cate.

So, although many people use the term "GFSI Certi ed" or "GFSI Certi cation" that is not
correct. What they mean is "Certi cation to a GFSI recognized standard".

What do I need to do? Where do I start?

Here is a brief summary of the steps.

Implement the food safety management system and document your processes.
Be audited by a certi cation body and receive your certi cation

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is coordinated by The Food Business Forum CIES. This
forum is a global food network made up of approximately 400 retailers and manufacturers
worldwide.

GFSI does not certify organizations, but has determined which food safety certi cations it
accepts or recognizes. These are called GFSI Benchmarked Standards. Many organizations will
request that its suppliers achieve a "GFSI Benchmarked" certi cation scheme. If you have been
asked to get a GFSI recognized standard you have several to choose from. 

How to select a  Certi cation Scheme

With the choices of Food Safety Management Systems Certi cation, how can your organization
choose the right Food Safety Management System Standard?

The Global Food Safety Initiative  plays an important role in Food Safety Systems Certi cation.
This organization has “benchmarked” existing food safety schemes. Once a system is
“benchmarked” it means that certi cation to the scheme is accepted by organizations requiring

Bene ts of GFSI
The ndings of a recent Global Food Safety Initiative survey of food safety professionals at
certi ed facilities around the world reinforce the many bene ts of GFSI:

72%of food safety professionals say GFSI has enhanced food safety practices at their
facilities
61% say GFSI has improved their ability to produce safe food
90% say GFSI has helped to increase employee food safety knowledge, and
68% say GFSI is helping to prepare them for forthcoming regulatory changes.
