CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes a brief background about online learning as well as face to

face learning. This chapter also includes the introduction about the topic and the

difference between the online learning and face to face learning.

INTRODUCTION

AMA Computer College is the first ICT University in the Philippines and in Asia. As

part of its innovative programs, the school launched Online Education for the senior high

school students. The program contains online quizzes, modules, and learning activity

sheets. It only needs a computer/tablet/cell phone and an internet connection. It aims to

make life easier for students. They could easily access the modules and no longer need to

take down notes since they could easily save the modules in their respective hard drives.

However, there are also reasons for which students might prefer more traditional, in-

class activities. Although social connectedness can be derived online, most students feel

that face-to-face contact is essential for building a sense of community. Even when

classes are only partially online, students may feel that online discussion detracts from

this feeling of community with their peers and tutor. Further, at a practical level, students

need to exercise more self-motivation to complete activities online, compared to in-class,

1
where that role of motivator is taken on by the lecturer. Thus, it is important to explore

student perceptions of both online and face-to-face learning experiences, rather than just

one and the other.

With this in mind, the group decided to come up with the study on the comparative of

having an online study and traditional study. It aims to create awareness for all students

regarding the strengths and weaknesses for better understanding and appreciation. The

findings of the study will, hopefully, bring enlightenment both to the students and the

school in order to address its weaknesses and strengthen its advantages.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Using technologies nowadays keeps us busy with different types of devices on our

hands, especially since it has been growing until our future endeavors and so on. Online

educations have been used by certified schools among different countries. Although the

since technologies are more for diversions or entertainment. It is very difficult to focus

on our objectives in OED (Online Education System). So upon agreeing that hands on

learning has a much outstanding more significance on learning system better than online

learning.

According to Remez Sasson (2001), doing online learning, mostly as part of the

grading system on schools gives out the lack of concentration from online education

2
which is due to many outcomes of distractions in online activities. Since social media,

gaming, and other known interference could bug out the users or perhaps students from

using online education.

For instance, it could be very difficult to understand the situations happening on some

parts of the online learning academy. Many types of lectures are too many which gives

the lack of interest for the students. It could also have few/major problems with the servers

of the site being used.

As we all know that teaching in class is a much preferable way of spoon feeding

students without any struggle for the teachers to lecture them without any hesitate.

Students could give out questions and the professor could answer in an instant.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study is sought to compare the face to face learning and online learning and find

which is more effective in learning.

Specifically sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the target beneficiaries in terms of:

1.1 Gender:

1.2 Grade/Level:

3
2. Is there a difference between online learning and face to face learning in terms

of degree in interest in learning of students?

3. Between online learning and face to face learning, which of the two makes

learning easy and comfortable for students?

4. Are there any differences in students who are learning face to face and online

topics/discussion?

5. Do students discern face to face learning and online learning as having similar

results or different results?

6. Do students prefer:

6.1) Face to face learning

6.2) Online learning

6.3) 50% Face to face learning 50% Online learning

HYPOTHESIS

The researchers/proponents think that face to face learning is better than the online

learning because in face to face learning, the students will be more educated because the

teachers will guide the students and the students can ask questions and they could answer

in an instant.

4
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is significant to the following:

 STUDENT. This study will help the students to state their opinions about the

online learning and face to face learning in AMA Computer College

 SCHOOL. This study will help the school to strengthen the advantages of face

to face learning and online learning that affects the senior high school students

in AMA Computer College

 RESEARCHERS. This study will serve as a guide as they conduct another

study related to this topic

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study will examine the status among the senior high school students having

online learning and face to face learning. However, the researchers bound some

limitations to their study. This study will only cover the school year 2017-2018. This

study is only limited to the senior high school students in AMA Computer College

Fairview.

RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This chapter includes the ideas, finished thesis, generalization or conclusions,

methodologies and others. Those that were included in this chapter helps in familiarizing

information that are relevant and similar to present study.

RELATED LITERATURE

A. FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to the research entitled “The History of Online education”

Published by Ryan Hickey mentioned that:

The Internet would not be created by the Department of

Defense for another nine years, the University of Illinois created
an Intranet for its students in 1960. It was a system of linked
computer terminals where students could access course materials
as well as listen to recorded lectures. (2014)

The proponents noticed that the Internet was not at all created by the

Department of Defense and the proponents demonstrated the online education's

history of being aware to our topic.

7
According to the article entitled “Definition of Online education as Distance

Learning” Published by Sabri G. Bebawi, Collins, 2002 it was noticed there that:

Online education is defined as the creation and proliferation

of the personal computer, the globalization of ideas and other
human acts, and the use of technology in exchanging ideas and
providing access to more people. Audio, video, computer, and
networking technologies are often combined to create a
multifaceted instructional delivery system. The fundamental
method to unite the distance learning instructor with the distance
learner is the network. Networks suitable for distance learning
implementations include satellite, cable modem, digital
subscriber lines (DSL), and wireless cable.”

The proponents put up with this idea or definition to show us the use and

purpose of online education and how convenient it is for our studies.

According to the research entitled “A Definition of Traditional Teaching”

Published by Drew Schrader Mentioned that:

Traditional teaching is the expectation that students will learn

because we tell them to. If I were to create a spectrum of teaching
practices from traditional to non-traditional, I think I would use
the above as my criteria. Moving away from traditional
educational practices has less to do with technology (iPads, etc)
or technique (PBL, PrBL, Challenge based, etc) and more to do
with context and motivation. Whenever I assume that the person
I am working with will learn because I am telling them, the more
traditional I am being. (2013)

The proponents put up with this idea or definition to show us the uses of

Traditional education and how it is important.

8
In several years, they came up with this new system called “Blended

Learning” According to the net entitled “Literature Review on Hybrid/Blended

Learning” Published in August 26, 2013 and Published by: Yiran Zhao (HGSE)

and Lori Breslow (MIT TLL) and (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2001;

Schunn & Patchan, 2009; Lovett, Meyer, & Thille, 2008; Bowen, Chingos, Lack,

& Nygren, 2012) they stated that:

In the replacement model, face-to-face lectures are substituted

either partially or fully by online material, and class meeting time
is reduced. The most common practice is to require students to
watch videos online prior to coming to class and/or to complete
some type of assignment.

The proponents discovered that the "Blended learning" is the combination of

Traditional and Online education systems. Which requires the students to get the

50% of their grade from the traditional education system which is class meeting

and the other half from the online education system. This only means that if the

student failed the Traditional system, he/she could still make the grade by passing

the online education system.

9
This statement justifies the differences between online education and

Traditional education. According to the net entitled “Online education vs.

Traditional education” Kendall Bird mentioned that:

Online education benefit to taking online courses is that they

offer flexibility to the student. This is a great option for those who
already have a time commitment with family and work. Online
classes will mold with your schedule log in to your online course
at a time that works best for you as opposed to having to attend a
lecture at a specific time. This option is best for those who have
a little more time in their schedule. Even Traditional education if
you’re hoping for a little flexibility, on-campus courses typically
offer day and evening schedules so you can coordinate with your
daily commitments. One thing you’ll need to remember to factor
in is where you live and work in proximity to the campus. (2014)
The proponents/researchers demonstrate the benefits of Traditional education

and online education and how this statement is important.

B. LOCAL LITERATURE

In the “Philippines to succeed in E-Learning via effective ICT sector” by Tam Noda,

Senator Edgardo Angara— the chair of the Senate Comittee on the Education, Arts and

Culture, mentioned that:

Filipinos must be quick to study the new methodologies, new

techniques and instruments in facilitating distance learning. To
accomplish this, he said that the country needs qualified
professionals with a progressive vision. "The Philippines is not
far behind from the best distance learning providers in the world,"
Angara claimed. "The next step is to make e-learning even more
accessible for each and every Filipino." he added.

10
This must believe that with e-learning it is best that the grasp of technology is used as

an advantage and that the learners should be fast learners in terms of using new

techniques. We also need someone who possess a progressive vision towards the better

education that it’ll lead.

Digital versions of textbooks, educational magazines and television programs are now

available for basic education. E-learning portals and online management programs for

students and teachers have also been made available. In the “Investing in e-learning,

future” that's posted by Tish Martinez-Castillo at Philippine Daily Inquirer, the Executive

Director of Education Publisher, Diwa Learning Systems Inc., Jose Maria T. Policarpio

says that:

Teaching today's learners has become more challenging

because technology is fast evolving. Think of it this way, we are
preparing them for jobs that don’t yet exist and for technologies
that haven’t been invented.

It is for the learners to be ready in the future happenings since we are all aware that

the technology are continously developing and evolving.

11
As elearning capability is further enchanced, this meant education anytime, anywhere

without the need for physical classrooms – just the magic of satellite, the Internet, and

handheld devices. In the post in Rappler titled "AMA Education System pioneers

'Blended Learning System' for senior high school students" (a press release by AMA

Education System) it is mentioned that:

As AMAES further enhanced its eLearning capability, this

allowed the creation of e-classes and enhanced learning through
the Internet. For the school year 2016-2017, AMAES Grade 11
students are now experiencing Blended Learning in and out of the
classroom — 50% with teachers in school and 50% online.
(2016)

The Grade 11 students has the opportunity to study inside the classroom and also study

online on their own at their chosen time, place and pace. This is also an opportunity for

them to fully understand a subject matter.

In the article “E-Learning in the Philippines: Trends, Directions, and Challenges” of

Melinda M. Dela Pena-Bandalaria, University of the Philippines Open University, it is

stated that:

In the Philippines, the e-learning is used synonymously with

online learning and concerns the online delivery of instructional
content as well as associated support services to students.

12
The e-learning institutions are extensively detailed with the mechanisms being used

to ensure the quality education of the students.

As technology evolves, so does our realm of possibilities. With the rapid growth

of Internet adoption worldwide, people are now connected in ways that were previously

deemed impossible. In the post in Rappler titled “Technology and teaching: How the

Internet opened opportunities for education” by Nikki Natividad it is stated that:

The benefits of online teaching include one-on-one supervision, as it’s usually

one teacher to one pupil. So teachers don't need to spread themselves thin by
integrating many different teaching methods in one class; instead, they can adapt
to the learning style and learning curve of every pupil and make use of different
online classroom tools. These include a virtual whiteboard to write, draw, and
even highlight certain words, as well as a chat box feature. Another benefit is
flexibility, as teachers and learners alike can choose to have classes depending on
their availability.

In online teaching, this allows the teachers and learners to have a one on one session

and to have classes whenever they have the availability. With these type of learning

online, it also has tools that will help in further learning.

13
RELATED STUDIES

C. FOREIGN STUDIES

According to the net entitled “The Online Education System” Supervised by:

Philip Greenspun and Published by:Aileen Tang, She stated that:

The Online Education System is a database-backed Web

service for the purposes of teaching and learning. It creates online
communities of people and provides the appropriate tools for
them to perform their roles, whether they are professors, students,
teaching assistants, course administrators, or class secretaries.
The MIT Sloan School of Management plans to adopt the
education system as a replacement for their current system, The
Virtual Campus. As a result, the education system's first release
will be a customized adaptation for the Sloan School that includes
a personalized portal page, a searchable file archive, and a system
for managing and administrating classes. The system creates
online communities of faculty, students, staff, and alumni at
Sloan and provides mechanisms for interaction and collaboration
among members of these communities.

The proponents/researchers demonstrate the system of online education, it

means the all file in Online Education like Name, Grades, Answers, and Codes is

in the data based.

According to the net entitled “ONLINE VS ONCAMPUS/ONLINE

EDUCATION VS TRADITIONAL EDUCATION Published by: Erin Fuller,

He stated that:

As a student, there are different settings to choose from to

further your education. You can go the traditional way or attend
classes online. Both are very effective methods, but we are going

14
to analyze which method would suit you according to: Your
learning styles, convenience and cost, and the amount of time,
you want to spend obtaining your college degree.

The proponents/researchers demonstrate that Online Education and Traditional

Education are very effective.

According to the net entitled “Advantage and Disadvantage of Online

Learning” Published in: April 5, 2013 and Published by: Stephen Armstrong,

She stated that:

Nowadays, online learning turns out to be more and more

practiced. Many traditional universities started to share their
courses online for free. It represents an easy and comfortable
method to achieve knowledge in almost every field, from law and
accounting, to human sciences, such as psychology and sociology
or history. Online learning is a great alternative to traditional
universities, especially for people who can’t afford the time and
money to take real courses.

The proponents/researchers demonstrate the Advantage and Disadvantage of

Online Learning to being aware in to our topic.

According to the net entitled “Advantage and Disadvantage of Classroom

Learning Published by: Spencer Hendricks, He stated that:

A classroom environment offers students the opportunity to

have face-to-face interactions with their peers and instructors.
This is an added social benefit as well as an educational aid.
Because students see the same peers in class every session, they

15
get a chance to form friendships. In the case of higher learning,
pupils can find potential lifelong professional connections. On
the educational side, students get a chance to participate in a
lecture or class discussion physically. If something is not
understood, interrupting to ask for clarification is always an
option.

The proponents/researchers demonstrate the Advantage and Disadvantage of

Classroom Learning to being aware into our topic.

According to the net entitled “The Power of face to face Education” Published

by: Abdulmajeed Alruqi and Mike Cooney, they stated that:

Education is a very important part of our life and no one can

deny importance of education in this era. No matter what happens
people should continue to learn. Now the question arise Face to
face education or online education? His topic has been debated
for many years. People are confuse when they have to choose
mode of education but I think that face to face education is best
type of education because effectiveness of online education is
still unclear and people do not prefer online education. (california
state university stanislaus) There are majority of things that can
only be learned by face to face education because only face to
face education can make practical sense. In face to face education
the only medium present is the communication between sender
and the receiver. For thousands of years face to face education
was the mode of education until online education was introduced.

The proponents/researchers demonstrate the advantage about Face-to-Face

education to being aware into our topic.

16
D. LOCAL STUDIES

In the “E-learning for College, Adult and Young Learners and for Preserving

Local Knowledge: The Miriam College Experience” by Maria Lourdes

Quisumbing Baybay it is mentioned that:

What is e-learning? “Any form of learning that utilizes a

computer or technological network for delivery, interaction, or
facilitation” (Carry and Willis, 2001). “A special kind of
technology-based learning” (Anderson cited by Gerhard & Mayr,
2002). The delivery of content via all electronic media, including
the Internet, intranets, extranets, satellite broadcast, audio/video
tape, interactive TV and CD-ROM (Urdan & Weggen cited by
Gerhard & Mayr, 2002). Tthe process of learning aided by
information and communication technologies (ICTs).

Since e-learning is one of the most powerful tool available to the growing need

for education this helps the students and instructors for advanced learning through

the electronic. This also utilizes the special kind of learning as mentioned above

since it can delivered contents via internet.

In the “A Chronological Research on the Development of Online Learning in

the Philippines” of Maria Anna N. Bantayan, it is stated that:

17
Through this, a student can be able to pursue his education
without pausing on his daily activities. One of the factors in
enrolling in such online courses is not only the ease of the concept
of studying via the Internet, but also the credibility of the
institution offering such courses (Arcaina, 2005). Because of this,
it is mostly established universities and colleges that have the
infrastructure and foundation of quality education, not to mention
the financial resources that would offer them. One major reason
why people like working professionals would enroll in online
learning is the convenience and easy access in terms of study,
making it a timesaving venture for the student (Arcaina, 2005).
Not only is it time saving, but money saving too, as it reduces the
amount of travel to and fro (Teehankee, 1999), and instances
where you would have to buy food from outside establishments.
Also, in terms of tuition, it is a less expensive investment than
you would if you enroll in a traditional educational institution
(Madarang, 2004).

As mentioned above there are also perks in learning through online because it

is more convenient for those students that has something to do every day in their

lives. With online learning, they still can study at home or at work reducing the

time in travelling from their home to their schools or the hours that they’ve might

spend inside their classrooms.

While in the “eLearning, eTeaching, and eResearch Through Collaboration and

Networking in the Digital Era” of Dr. Grace Javier Alfonso it’s stated that:

18
The widening of the virtual teaching and learning culture
worldwide has ushered in the changing learning styles of our
Filipino students. Each year, more and more digital natives are
joining the higher education sector. Even digital migrants like us
are constantly being put in a position where we have to adapt to
a new technology. Challenging us faculty and learners to develop
other media literacies and deep realization that teachers and
learners are co-creators of academic texts through research and
praxis pushes new knowledge for the growth of our disciplines
and communities of practice.

It is a challenge for us the new generations to immediately adapt the

modernization of the technology and it is needed so that we can study and enchance

our knowledge and skills for the better use of it.

In the “E-Learning Management System with Screen Share Technology” of

Jopal Matthew M. Dumanig, Berlin Jade L. Fabio, Mavis Joy C. Ibañez, Hyzel

May V. Rendon—it is mentioned that:

The E-Learning Management System with Screen Share

Technology ensures quality education for the students and for
quality teaching of the teachers. Modules are given and are very
useful for the students and of the teachers. The computation of
the cost and benefit analysis are also provided for the school to
implement the system. The development of this system had gone
to different processes and circumstances. This system ensures
that the benefits for the school observe quality standards and
quality assurance.

19
In this type of system it is implemented for the quality education of the students

and ensures that with these, the standard is observe that it has the standard and

assurance.

In the posts in “STI students to benefit from latest e-learning system

acquisition” of STI.

To allow teachers and deans to remotely monitor their students’

progress level and learning access patterns, the system has
likewise been equipped with an advanced learning management
module that’s reflective of current job-related and entry-level
practices -- so users can get an actual feel of the whole nursing
experience upon completion of the online review course, at their
own pace and time.

These helps the students in learning in their own pace. With these they can

monitor the students’ progress in learning through e-learning.

SYNTHESIS

Significant studies and related literatures as mentioned in this paper proved to be

relevant to our studies. Not only did it give researchers ideas on the different experiences

both with traditional learning and online learning, but it motivated the researchers to dig

more deeply on the effectiveness of both methods.

20
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

This chapter of the study includes the procedures to be used in conducting the

proposed study. This chapter will also show how the proponents will present the results

of the data gathered by the proponents.

RESEARCH DESIGN

As the research study commenced, the proponents used only one method of research

to conduct this study. The proponents used only the descriptive research as the research

design.

Descriptive Research. The proponents used the descriptive research as their research

design. This kind of research design is used to describe characteristics of the target

beneficiaries being studied. For its primary data accumulation, the proponents conducted

surveys for the target beneficiaries. This method was utilized to collect information from

the target respondents about their experiences in having both online learning and face to

face learning. The collected data will show the comparison between the online learning

and face to face learning.

21
POPULATION AND SAMPLING SIZE

Population and sampling size is the number of the respondents that is being questioned

in order to gain information needed in this study. The proponents have come up with 100

senior high school students in AMA Computer College Fairview, because they use both

online learning and face to face learning as their method in studying. They were asked

about their opinions on the online learning and face to face learning in AMA Computer

College Fairview.

Questionnaire. It is used to collect written information and opinions of the target

beneficiaries about the study. This type of survey questionnaire that is being used in this

research is self-made questionnaire. The survey questionnaire is composed of 5 questions

that are related to the statement of the problem. The survey questionnaire will be

answered by the senior high school students in AMA Computer College Fairview

regarding their opinions about the proposed study.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter includes a summary of the main findings of the thesis, and the states

the deductions obtained. It also presents the significance of the study, and relates the

findings to the objectives and problems written in the introduction part of the thesis.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Based on the gathered data, the researchers came up with the following findings:

 Survey Respondents

One Hundred (100) random respondents comprised 100% of the total

percentage of the result. This means that all the respondents are only Senior High

School at AMA Computer College (AMACC).

 Students who are more receptive in face to face learning or in online learning

Based on the data and information gathered by the survey conducted by the

proponents, (67) respondents which comprised of 67% of the total percentage

answered that they are more receptive in face to face learning than online learning

while (33) respondents which comprised of 33% of the total percentage answered

that they are more receptive in online learning than face to face learning.

Does going to school every day will help the students learn more?

36
 Majority of our respondents are having difficulties dealing with their online

education because of some reasons. And they think that face to face education is

easier than online education.

 The respondents preferred face to face learning than online learning or rather

choosing both. They must've thought that it is much more comfortable attending

school and learning personally.

 The larger number of the respondents are aware of the differences that face to face

learning and online learning has.

RECOMMENDATIONS

 There are still students out there who tend to not take online education serious.

Allowing students to answer their Online quizzes and tests at their home alone not

being able to monitor how they really are answering it leads them to distractions

like computer games and social media sites. If the school would only turn

Monday-friday into a regular school days and let the students use the school's

computer labs providing more devices and hiring enough teachers to be able to

consume the school days' time wise and right. The amount of the students that are

really into online education will increase. It would be much better if the teachers

will be able to guide the students while they are answering the online education

inside the school.

 The school must emphasize and strengthen the advantages of online education in

order for them to persuade/convince the students how it really is advantageous

and hassle-free. And how helpful it is for gaining new knowledge.

 The instructor’s daily presence and participation in the online classroom is critical

to helping students learn, gain confidence, and feel secure in their new and

sometimes foreign environment. Teachers must teach the lessons included in the

online education.

 Attending school means having a lot of interaction and firsthand experience. By

having people around you, you'll feel at ease and comfortable studying. You'll

also develop your skill in adapting with your environment.

 Being familiar nowadays with the differences of both, face to face and the online

learning are inevitable. Since the generations today are more into technologies,

it's not doubtful that you can access learning even online.
