Deflec on Check
The deflec on of reinforced concrete beams is not directly calculated and the serviceability of the beam is measured
by comparing the calculated limi ng basic span/effec ve depth ra o L/d
The following table gives basic span/effec ve depth ra o for rectangular and flanged beams for spans up-to 10 m.
For spans exceeding 10 m values in the above table are mul plied by (10/Span) except for
can levers where the design is jus fied by calcula ons.A
For beams with tension reinforcement, the basic values of L/d are mul plied by using the
modifica on factor;
where
M = design ul mate moment at the centre of the span or, for a can lever, at the support
NOTE: As pointed out in Reynolds RC Designers Handbook the term 5/8 which is applicable for γms = 1.15 is given
incorrectly as 2/3 in BS 8110 which is applicable to γms = 1.05
As req = area of tension reinforcement required at mid-span to resist the moment due to design
ul mate loads (at support for can levers)
As prov = area of tension reinforcement provided at mid-span (at support for can levers)

For beams with compression reinforcement, the basic values of L/d is mul plied by using the modifica on factor;D
