‘Ecological intensification’ swaps

pesticides for biodiversity

PART 1

 The definition of intensive agriculture

Intensive agriculture is one of the efforts to increase agricultural output by optimizing
existing agricultural land. Intensive agriculture aims to achieve the highest yield at the
lowest cost possible.

 The example of intensive agriculture

There was a statement about intensive agriculture from Professor David Kleijn. From
that statement, we can conclude that intensive agriculture uses pesticides and artificial
ferlisers to control pests. If the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers in excessive
doses will cause damage to agricultural comodities that have an effect on the health of the
consuming human.

 The issue of increasing the world population

There is an issue. The issue is by 2050, it is estimated that the world population will
reach 9 billion and putting pressure on the global food supply. So, we should uses
renewable biological resources to create a secure and healthy food supply. The solution
from that issue is conventional intensificataion seems to be the most likely choice but
there are alternatif such as indoor farming and emerging techniques referred to in
agricultural circles as ecological intensification.
