Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Knowledge will bring one the opportunity to make the difference. Change is inevitable; it

is needed especially for the purpose of improving life. Nowadays, the needs of the people

tend to increase, whether it is a product or service. Because of the increasing demands, it is

necessary to find a solution that could help satisfy them (Fagin, 2017).

Embrace the famous saying that there is nothing constant in this world except change.

The world is full of inventions, and innovation is the proof that everything could be

improved and developed. Investors and innovators would not remain permanently in this

world but their creations would. Thus, the world needs to produce more inventors and

innovators.

Philippines produce modern machine inventors through what is called or named

mechanical engineers. Mechanical engineering is a diverse subject that derives its breadth

from the need to design and manufacture everything from small individual parts and devices

e.g., micro scale sensors and inkjet printer nozzles to large systems e.g., spacecraft and

machine tools. The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the

marketplace. (http://me.columbia.edu/what-mechanical-engineering)

In a growing country, it is very important to adapt to changes in order to compete with

other countries. Given the fact that Calamba is one of the growing cities in the province of

Laguna, it has numerous technological parks that offer many jobs that need professional

engineers. Just like in Manila, there are also institutions here in Calamba that offer

Engineering programs. But the problem arises because most of these institutions are private

and not all the students can afford to go to these schools. This project aims to offer

Mechanical Engineering program in City College of Calamba for those aspiring Mechanical

Engineers. This public institution will provide quality education to financially challenged but

deserving students who are willing to fulfill their dreams.

Review of Related Literature

Petroski (2000) as cited by Hoffman (2017) emphasized the importance of studying and

understanding design failures as a means to creating better designs. He cited many well-

known examples of engineering failures such as the Hyatt Regency skywalk, the Mianus

River bridge collapse, and the DC-10 engine servicing procedure. However, the main

message of the book is that failures may be initiated by factors that were not considered in

the original design, or not re-evaluated as designs were optimized or changed. Particularly

now, as our design analysis and visualization tools become increasingly refined and precise,

Petroski’s book reminds us that no computer tool can ever replace critical thinking on the

part of an engineer.

Pirsig (1977) as cited by Marchese (2017), although his book was published over 40 years

ago, it remains highly relevant today as a key volume on any mechanical engineer’s

bookshelf. Conceived and written well before the formalized introduction of quality

management and standards, he asks the question, what is quality?—a question that ultimately

literally drove him insane. Written in narrative form, this book has multiple layers. On the

surface, it is the story of a father (the author) on a motorcycle trip with his 12-year-old son.

As the journey unfolds, the second layer of the book is revealed as the author comes to

terms with a ghost named Phaedrus, who is his former personality prior to his receiving

electroshock therapy, which was the ultimate downward spiral into insanity. As the story of

Phaedrus is slowly becomes known, the third layer of the book is also revealed, which is a

journey into the philosophical questions that remain relevant today: Why does technology

alienate rather than unify society? What is quality, and if we can’t define it, how do we live a

high-quality life? This book represents a journey upon which all mechanical engineers should

embark.

Every mechanical engineer should have a copy of Don Norman’s terrific book, The Design

of Everyday Things. This book is a classic. It’s been through several editions, yet each time I

read it I come away with insights that are new, fresh, and important. This is because the

book is only partly about design; it is also about people and the ways that people use, or

struggle to use, simple, familiar products. Using consumer products such as doors, faucets,

and keypads as examples, Norman asks us to step back from our problem-solving work

from time to time and consider how people will use or maintain the things that we have

created. The examples of poor design are hilarious and Norman’s guidelines for good design

are both simple and profound. The Design of Everyday Things can change the way we think

about the products we use, and about the part we play in creating new products (Norman,

(2000) as cited by Donnell, (2017)).

Review of Related Studies

The beginnings of mechanical engineering go back to the craftsmen and inventors of the

first tools and basic machineries powered by human or animal labour, water or wind energy,

or their combination. Mechanical engineering as a field of engineering study, however, did

not start until the advent of the Industrial Revolution with the demand for the steam engine.

The first professional Mechanical engineering is the discipline that

applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyse, manufacture,

and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering

disciplines.

Society for mechanical engineers, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, was formed in

the United Kingdom in 1847. Since then, advancements in the field of mechanical

engineering have led to such breakthroughs as the internal combustion engine, which made

heavier-than-air powered flight possible and would also lead to the development of

the automobile, air conditioning, robotics, and more.

Mechanical engineering is one off the oldest and broadest profession as defined by the

American Society of Mechanical engineers. It is one of the most expansive and lucrative

engineering fields today are mechanical engineering. With skyscrapers going up in all parts of

the world, to the constant demands for housing mechanical engineering are valued breed. A

mechanical engineering student will gain a wide set of skills. Computer applications,

electricity, structures, mathematics, physics, drafting as a basic knowledge of engineering.

It is considered to be one of the most challenging undergraduate degree courses available.

Once students have pushed through the core curricula, they have proven themselves capable

of most professional challenges. In later years of the degree it allows for a lot of branching

out and option exploration. Some go into aerospace engineering, engine design, robotics,

manufacturing and even the park ride design.

It is also a field of changing so quickly, that you may study things in your final year that

were thought almost unfeasible in first year.

In a notoriously tough graduate job market it’s fair to say that degree- level engineers

have an edge. Engineers build societies and mechanical engineers specifically apply to

fundamental maths and physics laws to create and build mechanical devices we use every

day.

So it’s no surprise to see that mechanical engineer students enjoy particularly good graduate

prospects.

MEs has the obvious focus of setting graduates up for life as an engineer, but there are

other options available for those who would prefer a job on the administrative side.

Particular job areas include as an engineer in aerospace, automation, civil contracting

controls and instruments, maintenance and of course mechanisms. Banking, patents and

management are also pathways. Several professional organizations offer specialized positions

for Mechanical Engineering.

As long as there are equipment, machineries and mechanical works a mechanical engineer

is required for that facility. The Philippine Mechanical Engineering Code defines

“mechanical equipment/machineries” as those that are steam engines, internal combustion

engine, boilers, turbines, crushers, conveyors, hoists, elevators, mills, pipelines, line shafting,

etc. while mechanical works, plants include steam plants, internal combustion engine plants,

hydraulic power plants, pumping plants, refrigerating plants, air conditioning plants, mill

shops, factories, shipyards, etc. containing mechanical equipment, machinery or processes.
