lives. As a matter of fact, the digital revolutions has occurred and continues to

change the way of people’s live, do business, confront with studies and interact

socially. As people walks into the 21 st century or the modern generation, they

must be adjusted on the real world they are belonged to – studies, works and

other socio-cultural aspects just to make every works efficient and effective. On

the other hand, schools should acculturate students to be lifelong learners

wherein students need to learn how to seek out new information, think critically

and show initiative to meet up with the challenges of the fast-changing world.

A technology is multitude of resources through applications within. It is

very useful to every student, employees, professionals and other people around

the world, but it could be all useless if the real essence and purpose of these

cannot be used and practiced properly.

Microsoft Office applications are one of the very important tools that the

technology’s brought to everyone. Microsoft office covers a wide range of office

products like Microsoft publisher, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint,

According to the Importance of Microsoft Office Training, 2016 Microsoft

office coves a wide range of office products like Microsoft publisher, Microsoft

Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Word, Microsoft

OneNote, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel, developed by

Microsoft Corporation that is used in any work environment, it’s user friendly and

not as complicated as some may think. Microsoft Office is the world’s best and

famous work program for studying, personal use, and office work.

Titlow JP., 2011 the Microsoft Office Suite is used by 80 percent of

companies. Its popularity is only one good reason to get to know MS Office, but

there are more. On his study provided the four important reasons of Microsoft

Office Suite and the following are:

Popularity: Because Microsoft is used by so many businesses, the skills

you have working on the software are immediately transferrable to new jobs and

companies. It’s as if you speak the same language as everyone else! What

happens to you—and your career—if you don’t?

Communication: You can communicate and collaborate more effectively

with the Microsoft tools. Whether you’re using Outlook for email, or taking

advantage of the co-authoring features in Word and PowerPoint, you’re literally

on the same page as your co-workers. That ease of communication helps cut

down on errors and improve the quality of service you provide to your

customers.

Productivity: Microsoft helps you operate more efficiently so you can be more

productive. For example, Excel doesn’t just allow you to quickly enter and

compute data; it also has advanced analytical tools so you can discover patterns

and make sound financial decisions. Laborious tasks once performed only by

accounting professionals can now be completed quickly by assistants with the

right training.

Simplicity: Each of the MS Office components is user-friendly and includes

easy-to-access help files built right in. If you get stuck at any time, just go to the

help tab and type your question. You can even access online support for tutorials

on how to troubleshoot whatever issues arise.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a widely used commercial word processor designed by

Microsoft. Microsoft Word is a component of the Microsoft Office suite of

productivity software, but can also be purchased as a stand-alone product. It was

initially launched in 1983 and has since been revised numerous times. Microsoft

Word is available for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

In 1981, Microsoft hired Charles Simonyi to develop a word-processing

application. The first version was released in 1983. It was not initially popular,

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
12
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

owing to its radically different look compared to WordPerfect, the leading word

processor at that time. However, Microsoft improved Word continually over the

years, including a 1985 version that could run on a Mac. The second major

release of Word, in 1987, included an upgrade of major features in addition to

new functionalities such as support for the rich text format (RTF).

In 1995, with the release of Windows 95 and Office 95, which offered a

bundled set of office productivity software, sales of Microsoft Word increased

significantly.

Microsoft Word offers several features to ease document creation and

editing, including:WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) display: It ensures

that everything displayed on screen appears the same way when printed or

moved to another format or program.Spell check: Word features a built-in

dictionary for spell checking; misspelled words are marked with a red squiggly

underline. Sometimes, Word auto-corrects an obviously misspelled word or

phrase.Text-level features such as bold, underline, italic and strike-throughPage-

level features such as indentation, paragraphing and justification. External

support: Word is compatible with many other programs, the most common being

the other members of the Office suite.

Microsoft Windows is a group of several graphical operating system families,

all of which are developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. Each family caters

to a certain sector of the computing industry,(https://www.techopedia.com/

definition/3840/microsoft-word).

Microsoft Word (often called Word) is a graphical word processing program

that users can type with. It is made by the computer company Microsoft. The

purpose of the MS Word is to allow the users to type and save documents. There

features of MS Word those are; creating and saving a file; editing and formatting

a document; paragraph formatting; inserting header and footer and page

number; checking spelling and grammar; subscript and superscript; inserting

symbols; print preview and printing; inserting clip art, and picture; page setting;

bullet and number; border and shading; searching a word and replacing it by

another word and lastly inserting table, (Vethics2015).

Hutchison and McCoy, 2007 also stated that Microsoft Word is the word

processing component of the Microsoft Office Suite that primarily used to enter

edit, format, save, retrieve and print documents.

According to Daksh 2015, anyone can check for grammar and spelling

errors in Microsoft Word. Anyone can also get visual edge through text

modifications. With the WorldArt feature, every one of us can also choose a

compelling design than can match the theme. On his study also stated the other

uses of Microsoft Word. The following are; Sending Letters – everyone can write

the letter according to our requests. It might be a job application letter, a legal

document, or a business letter. Every individual can manage to produce a nearly

done and uniformly looking letter. With this, anyone can also make the recipient

of our letter feel respected. New Articles – writing news and press release is very

essential, so that readers will know the five W’s and the story behind the

happenings well. Scholarly Documents – students have to defend their thesis or

dissertation in front of the intelligent panel before they acquire a degree.

Therefore, students have to research and collect the information related to their

proposed topic while citing related studies as well. Envelopes –Snail-mail

communication is still used. Many people still resort to this way of

communicating for formality. To meet with the technology trends, the application

has features that let anyone create accordingly-formatted envelope templates.

Blog Post – the internet has thousands of meaningful blog posts, ranging from

different topics and branches each day. Homework and Assignments – your

assignment might be a reaction paper, a book report, an essay, or follow-up

questions regarding with the discussion and this application also use to be more

productive and beautiful. Publishing of Books – Authors need to make sure that

every page they are to publish is free from grammar errors. To guide their

readers, they would also need the foreword and the table of contents. Word has

also a feature that has different table of contents templates. Compelling

Documents – With this application, one can just go beyond writing a letter

through the traditional typewriter. One can also create presentable documents

besides the usual default format.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is powerful presentation software developed by

Microsoft. It is a standard component of the company's Microsoft Office suite

software, and is bundled together with Word, Excel and other Office productivity

tools. The program uses slides to convey information rich in multimedia. The

term "slide" refers to the slide projector, which this software effectively replaces.

PowerPoint was developed by Dennis Austin and Thomas Rudkin at

Forethought Inc. It was supposed to be named Presenter, but the name was not

adapted due to trademark issues. It was renamed PowerPoint in 1987 as

suggested by Robert Gaskins. In August of 1987, Microsoft bought Forethought

for $14 million and turned it into its graphics business unit, where the company

continued to develop the software. The first iteration was launched together with

Windows 3.0 in 1990. It only allowed slide progression in one direction – forward

– and the amount of customization was fairly limited.

PowerPoint experienced a very significant change in PowerPoint 97, which

added predefined transition effects and allowed the user to time them

appropriately so that slides would transition automatically. This allowed a

presenter to follow a predefined progression and go on with the presentation

without pausing to change or read the slides. PowerPoint 2007 introduced the

"ribbon" interface, marking a drastic change from the previous interface style.

According Plack M., 2013 stated that PPT is a tool; a tool that can effective

for both faculty and students, but should be used selectively and appropriately.

The benefits for faculty are it keeps you on task and helps you focus on your key

points so you meet your established objectives and so not become the

wandering lecturer! Truthfully, it is safer for a new faculty member to follow your

slides than to stray from your slides and open the dialogue to a potentially

18
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,

challenging classroom discussion. For faculty, I think this is a developmental

process.

If used properly, the benefits to students are they can identify the key

points of your presentation and help organize their thinking process. Using a

sequential approach can facilitate the development of the student’s thought

process.

The downside for students is they think they can gather the key points

without being present; however, if they only look for the key points without the

elaboration that went along with the presentation could limit their understanding

and ability to apply those key points. In addition, the instructor’s key points are

not the ONLY points in class. Peers (other students in class) provide tremendous

input to the topic at hand, and in fact, may modify the key points the instructor

intended to present.

The downside for faculty is the predesigned PowerPoint (PPT) can

constrain the discussion. While the PowerPoint provides a structure and

direction, it can limit flexibility. At times it can constrain the conversation in the

classroom….”hold that thought, we will get to that later (in the PowerPoint)”.

The other challenge with PPTs is that if you do include all the information

it becomes like a bulleted list to memorize without really understanding or

applying the concepts at a higher level. It gives students a false sense of security

that they can simply memorize the slides rather than apply (in class) what is

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
19
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

described on the slides.Of course there is the technique of using PPTs effectively

… Are you reading your PPTs (not so effective!); are you moving through your

PPTs without ever pausing for students to process information by interspersing

active learning strategies (e.g., questions, think-pair-share, cases, videos)

throughout (not so effective!); are you adding pictures and animations that

detract from your message (not so effective!). Creating PPTs needs to be a

thoughtful process. Creating effective PPT presentations that consider active

learning strategies takes time and effort, but I believe the time and effort are

well worth the outcomes.

Kemenade EV., 2013 stated that every individual use a different senses:

Auditive, Visual, Feeling, and Moving/Acting.Power point can help to move from

just listening to also seeing. if You use emotional video's You can also reach The

level of feelings. All are needed in learning. However and that is the downside of

lecturing and PowerPointing, learning is doing. The student needs no act, not

only the teacher; PowerPoint can stick to action by the teacher

Behzadnia B., 2013 stated the most important of advantage of using PPT

is related to focus of attention by students in classes, after that it is a kind of

relationship between subject and students that teacher can be create. Also, by

using PPT teacher can discuss about the main topics in the limit time.

I think using PPT has so many other advantages that nowadays extremely

teachers or lectures used this.

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019

Posinasetti NR. (2013) stated that PowerPoint is a tool and should be used

as such as others have said. For me it helps to organize my presentation in a

proper sequence so that I will not forget any points that I should give the

student in proper sequence. In my area of specialization requires a lot of

complex illustrations and diagrams that are often so complex that it is impossible

to draw them properly on the board. So it helps to present the material clearly,

coherently and in logical sequence. I spend a lot of time planning and going

through my slides a number of times to make sure that it is correct. If you

cannot spend that kind of time during the preparation of power point slides, then

you are literally reading from the textbook (albeit slides) which is bad. Also I

make these slides available to the students through our LMS so that they can

make any necessary notes beyond what is presented in the slides. Also slides do

not contain a lot of information that I will be adding to that. That way power

point is a great help if it is properly utilized.

Microsoft Publisher

Microsoft Publisher is a graphic design application that is similar to

Microsoft Word but differs in the fact that its emphasis lies more on page layout

and design, and less on word composition and formatting. It provides easy-to-

use and less expensive publishing options for creating designs and logos for

small businesses, where using other high end applications may not be feasible.

Moreover, it is an entry-level graphic design program included in some

versions of Microsoft Office. It is considered ideal for small business because it is

user friendly and does not demand prior knowledge about the application or

graphic design in general. Publisher includes templates for many types of

common business needs, such as business cards, brochures, address labels and

calendars. Microsoft offers the options to directly mail the file, export it as

another file type or upload it to the cloud and publish online.

and utilization and theperceived teachers‟ competence in technology at the

Dasmarinas.

The respondents of the study were116 non-computer teachers. The

questionnaire was the main tooling gathering the data in order to solicit

responses for thefollowing areas: technology orientation in terms of awareness,

utilization and the teacher’s competency in technology. The data gathered were

analyzed using the following statisticaltreatments: mean, standard deviation,

correlated t-test. Theresults of the computations were the following:The overall

mean on the technology of awareness of teacherswas 1.81, which means that

the respondents were aware on the useof technology to a little extent only. The

overall mean oftechnology utilization was 1.88, which means that

therespondents seldom utilized technology in their teaching. Theoverall mean of

utilization and competence items showed a correlated t-text value of .899. The

findings revealed thatthere was a positive and moderate to high

significantcorrelations between utilization and competence. This impliedthat the

more teachers use technology applications andoperations the more they become

competent in technology. The DOST conducted a survey of schools that gathered

baseline data on schools‟ Mathematics and Science teachers andthe extent of

the schools‟ use of ICT for instruction and other purposes. The survey, which

covered 4,310 public schools, usedthe following indicators: (1) The percentage of

computers usedfor instruction and the percentage of computers used for

administrative work, (2) The percentage of classes (by subjecttypes) that used

computers in instruction, (3) The percentage ofschools that engaged on outside

technical to maintain thecomputer system, (4) Percentage of schools with

telephone lines,(5) Observation of teacher and student practice and

(6)Interviews of innovative teachers on practices (teacher andstudent) related to

innovation, problems, solutions andprospects for sustaining and continuing

innovation. The following were identified as key problem areas forimplementing

ICT in basic education.

In study of Tinio (2002), respondents were asked to rankwhat they

perceived to be the five biggest obstacles to theirschools use of ICT for teaching

and learning. Rankings were consolidated and mean ranks were computed. Lack

of enoughcomputers is the single biggest obstacle. All other issues havemean

rankings considerably lower than this. Lack of enoughtechnical support for

operating and maintaining ICT resourcesand the lack of teacher training

opportunities are consideredbarriers to change as well. So too are the lack of

space forcomputers and the general lack of funds for operations, including

maintenance of equipment, purchase of supplies, andelectricity.

The present study finds similarities to the works of Jones(2003) wherein

he stated that teachers need to have mastered abasic level of computer literacy

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
24
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

for them to take advantage ofthe pedagogical and perfunctory upgrades that it

could bring.

Corbel’s (2004) writings, just like Jones’, focused on why teachers need

computer literacy skills. Teachers serve as themost direct agent of the entire

educational system. If armedwith functional computer knowledge, they possess

the potentialsto transform themselves into role models who may influence

theirstudents towards developing positive orientations and attituderegarding the

usefulness of computers.

The study conducted by Dollado (2002) and Cajilin (2009)tried to assess

the computer knowledge and skills of theteachers and administrators of the

school respondents. Theresults of their works highlighted the dismal level of

computerliteracy amongst surveyed school administrators and teachers. These

corpora strengthen the desire of the researcher toinvestigate whether Holy

Rosary Foundation has the samepredicament and if such is the case, what may

be done to address the problem.

Razak’s (2009) and Tinio’s (2002) works pointed out thepossible reasons

why teachers lack computer literacy. AlthoughRazak conducted his research in

Malaysia, the results werenevertheless useful in this present study; i.e. basically,

thosereasons are of systemic and attitudinal in nature. Throughawareness and

underscoring the importance of addressing those potential obstacles in initially

blueprinting and consequentlyimplementing an ICT program, the researcher is

purposivelyprovided with a major leverage. Preemptive actions may

beformulated to avoid the incipience of potential problems. The problems

identified by Department of Science andTechnology (DOST) in the course of

computer resources utilization and application provides the researcher invaluable

insights on the possible recurrence of same constraints in theconduct of this

study.

The work of Akhtar (2010), on the other hand, suggestedplans and

policies in training teachers on ICT which can be usedfor the proposal of the

program. The researcher concurs with hisviewpoint of giving primacy to the

provision of sound andholistic ICT programs such that teachers may in turn

becomeproactive leaders in spearheading innovations as regards totheir craft.

The optimism that such an ICT training program willconsequently make them

become invaluable assets of society inpursuit of development furthers the

researcher’s zealous motivation to proceed with this study.Recognizing the

educational enterprise as an open system, Rodriguez (2007) cited the

importance of positively involvingother societal sectors that may influence the

success integrating technology in education. Valenzuela’s (2005) study ran

similar to the present studyas regards to research design and instruments used,

in the sensethat both studies aimed to determine teachers‟ technology

awareness.

METHODOLOGY

The aim of this study is to find out the level of literacy skills particularly in

Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher among the Grade

10 Students of Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School and to provide an

effective intervention to improve or address their literacy skills on mentioned

Microsoft applications. It also covers the Research Design, Theoretical

Framework/Conceptual Framework, Respondents of the Study, Locale of the

Study, and the Intervention Plan.

Research Design

The action research design was utilized for this research study. With this,

it involves a spectrum of activities (e.g., research, planning, theorizing, learning

and development) aimed at the resolution of a problem or problems, (Chee,

2009). Specifically, the actions or interventions of this study aimed to improve or

address the literacy skills of Grade 10 students of Anselmo B. Legaspi National

High School.

Theoretical Framework/Conceptual Framework

This study anchored from Computer Self-Efficacy rooted in Social Learning

Theory (SLT) under the study of Donna Grant, 2009. It stated that in this

technology intensive society, most students are required to be proficient in

computer skills to compete in today’s global job market. These computer skills

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
27
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

usually consist of basic advanced knowledge in word processing, presentation,

and spreadsheet applications. Computer literacy is defined on the study as an

understanding of computer characteristics, capabilities and application, as well as

an ability to implement this knowledge in the skillful, productive use of computer

applications suitable to the individual roles in the society and the state of life

they are belonged. In regard of it, Microsoft Office is one of the applications that

plays important role to every student, teachers, employees and other

professional people that they must be literate to.

On the other hand, Microsoft Office is an important education application.

It is important to process raw facts into meaningful information. Microsoft word

can benefits teachers and students to create new innovative methods of learning

and teaching. Microsoft office suite for students helps to transmit educational

materials and practice systematically in school and university faster with higher

quality.

MS Office application can be used and utilized by teachers and students to

faster the process of receiving and giving information as well as to improve and

maximize practical education practices in schools and colleges. And to achieve

these purposes around the world, everyone should be literate and continue to

improve their skills.

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019

It is also stated that MS Office is a popular software suite featuring many

desktop publishing programs. It comes with everything that may come into use

in a classic office setting, hence the name. Computer users have the option of

several different Microsoft Office suites intended for students, home users, small

businesses and corporations. What you choose depends on your own

circumstances. In addition, MS Office is well known for being easy to use. Each

program comes with helpful features so you can achieve nearly any goal. You

can do anything you can imagine with this software, both for personal and

business use. They also have extensive help files built into the programs if you

get stuck. Furthermore, Microsoft Office comes with many different kinds of

software, all of which help with desktop publishing. If you are looking to write a

letter to a client, Microsoft Word is the right software to use. You could employ

Microsoft Publisher to help create a business brochure, or you could use MS

PowerPoint for presentation. This software suite is you need on studies and/or

for running your business that you must literate on using it.

Dialogue with Students

The term ‘dialogue’ derives from two words in classical Greek, “dia”

meaning ‘through’ and ‘logos’ meaning ‘word’, which jointly equate the term with

all verbal communication. Nevertheless, if dictionary definitions are a reasonable

proxy for everyday usage, dialogue still encompasses a wide range of social

practices: it is typically treated in dictionaries as synonymous with conversation

(e.g., Oxford University Press, 2002), and concept of conversation covers all

verbal exchanges (and series of such exchanges) where one individual addressed

individual replies (Howe, 1981). Yet even if numerous practices are ordinarily

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
30
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

regarded as dialogic, there has long been a sense of rarity in classrooms. This

sense has memorably been encapsulated in Flanders’ (1960) ‘two-thirds rule’,

which recognizes that classroom activity is dominated by verbal communication

but stresses that such communication is primarily teacher delivery.

Dialogue is often regarded as crucial for effective pedagogy. This is not

because any verbal address-reply interaction around curricular material is viewed

as valuable. Rather, it is widely believed that there are ways of organizing

classroom dialogue, which, if achieved with sufficient frequency, will prove

beneficial as regards educational goals.

Dialogue with the students in this study is important to monitor and to

address the problem regarding in literacy skills in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft

PowerPoint, and Microsoft Publisher.

Teaching and Training

Teaching is the process of attending to people’s need, experiences and

feelings, and intervening so that they learn particular things, and go beyond the

given, (Hattie, 2011).

According to Business Dictionary training means organized activity aimed

at imparting information and/or instructions to improve the recipient’s

performance or to help him or her attain a required level of knowledge or skill.

The respondents of this study will be under on teaching process given by

the researchers. They will also train through actual performance/hands-on on

computer and make activities regarding on the topic and lecture provided. This

will be the best action they will apply to improve their literacy skills on using

selected Microsoft Office Applications.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is not a new idea, it is possibly as old as any form of

collaborative or community action and has probably always taken place implicitly

or vicariously (Topping 2005) but in a changing Higher Education landscape,

more formalized and even assessed forms of peer teaching are becoming ever

more popular. Indeed Peer tutoring schemes appear to be becoming strategised;

developing to meet calls for accountability, better assessment, and improved

outcomes for students.

Peer tutoring (also referred to as peer learning, cooperative/collaborative

learning and peer collaboration), is taken here to refer to the 'use of teaching

and learning strategies in which students learn with and from each other without

the immediate intervention of a teacher' (Boud et al., 1999: 413). The literature

shows evidence that peer tutoring is being increasingly used across all disciplines

as a type of supplemental instruction or surrogate support. Programs are being

implemented in various ways to enhance the curriculum and/ or support students

Ginoy A.,Torcuator LL., Melanio J., Taborda A., Eleuterio E., Palma J., 2019
32
Anselmo B. Legaspi National High School – Cayangwan, Makato,
Aklan

through transitional stages of University life. These exchanges can range from

formal teaching in the classroom to sharing information informally. In general,

peer tutors help other students either on a one-to-one basis or in small groups

by continuing classroom discussions, developing study skills, evaluating work,

resolving specific problems and encouraging independent learning (Colvin 2007;

Falchikov 2001; Goodlad 1998; Boud et al 2001).

Research studies report that peer tutors show enhanced or increased

personal development, motivation and confidence (Hammond et al, 2010). Biggs

also noted students reported they liked the more friendly and relaxed learning

environment provided by mentors and the opportunity to initiate friendships

amongst their peer groups (1999).

Peer mentoring is normally through evaluative questionnaires, one-to-one

interviews post-event and statistical analysis (Goodlad 1995; Colvin 2007;

Brandwein 1985).

Peer Tutoring applied in this study to those students or respondents that

is absent on the particular day of teaching and training. This technique helped

them to cope up with the flow of interventions or actions regarding on improving

literacy skills in selected Microsoft Office applications when the respondents

missed a time of intervention.
