CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the

background of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study,

definition of terms and scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the Study

The MS Office proficiency is sometimes described in terms of levels of mastery:

beginner, intermediate, advanced. The lowest level lets users open or create

documents, enter or update information. Intermediate users would be able to make

bulk changes or operations. This research is to find the competence level of teachers

in using productivity tool. Thus, the researcher decided the topic about “Competence

level of teachers in using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), there are

significant gaps in access, affordability, and skills related to information and

communication technologies (ICTs) between developed and developing countries, as

well as between urban and rural areas. This means that some teachers may have more

opportunities and resources to use and learn Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, while

others may face barriers or challenges that hinder their digital competence

development. For example, some teachers may lack adequate infrastructure,

equipment, software, internet connectivity, or technical support to use these

applications effectively. Others may lack proper training, guidance, or motivation to

integrate these applications into their teaching practice or assessment methods.

Furthermore, some teachers may encounter cultural, linguistic, or ethical issues that
affect their use of these applications or their communication with students or

colleagues.

A study conducted by DLSU (2019) teachers in the Philippines faced various

challenges in using technology for education. The study found that factors influencing

teachers' use of technology, their readiness and acceptance of technology, and their

perceptions of technology in the classroom all played a significant role. Additionally,

the study examined the roles teachers played in technology-based learning

environments. It also identified the digital inequality issues experienced by both

teachers and students. In this context, the study offered recommendations to improve

the digital literacy and competence of teachers and students.

Thus, it's really important to know how good teachers are at using Microsoft

Excel and PowerPoint to check how well students are doing in school. With

technology becoming a big part of teaching, we want to understand how good

teachers are with these computer tools and how it affects students' learning. This

study aims to find out more about this so that teachers and students can do better in

school. By doing this research, we hope to improve how teachers use technology and

ultimately help students succeed in their studies, making education more effective and

accessible for everyone.

Definition of Terms

This part conceptually and operationally defines the important terms used in this

study.

Competency. According to hse.gov.uk (2023) competency is a “combination of

training, skills, experience and knowledge that a person has and their ability to apply

them to perform a task safely. Other factors, such as attitude and physical ability, can

also affect someone's competence.” Also, National Institute of Health (2021) defined

competence as “the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that contribute to

individual and organizational performance. Knowledge is information developed or

learned through experience, study or investigation. Skill is the result of repeatedly

applying knowledge or ability. Ability is an innate potential to perform mental and

physical actions or tasks. Behavior is the observable reaction of an individual to a

certain situation. The target proficiency level for each competency will vary based on

an individual’s position and the organization’s needs.”

In this study, competence refers to knowing the competence level of Senior

High School in Camaligan National High School using Microsoft.

Teacher. According to linked (2020) teachers refer as a “Expert who is capable of

importing knowledge that will help learners to build, identify and to acquire skills that

will be used to face the challenges in life.” Also, IGI GLOBAL (2022) defined

teacher as a “person who helps others to learn.

In this research include educators working in educational institutions, such as

schools, responsible for imparting knowledge to students.

Microsoft Office. According to subjectguides.york.ac.uk (2020) Microsoft offices is

a suite of applications designed to help with productivity and completing common

tasks on a computer. You can create and edit documents containing text and images,

work with data in spreadsheets and databases, and create presentations and posters.”

Also, Technopedia (2019) defined Microsoft offices as a “suite of desktop

productivity applications that is designed specifically by Microsoft for business use. It

is a proprietary product of Microsoft Corporation and was first released in 1990. For

decades, MS Office has been a dominant model in delivering modern office-related

document-handling software environments.”

From the present study, Microsoft Office encompasses a collection of computer

software applications developed by Microsoft, including Word, Excel, and

PowerPoint. These applications are used by teachers for various tasks such as creating

educational materials, managing administrative duties, and facilitating classroom

activities.
Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on examining the competency level of teachers in using

Microsoft Office.

The research targeted the SHS teachers in Senior High School at Camaligan National

High School. This study was delimited to the teachers in Senior High School, and the

other teachers in Camaligan National High School were not part of this study.
CHAPTER II

INTRODUCTION

This chapter examines the competence level of Senior High School teachers at

Camaligan National High School in using Microsoft Office applications. By

reviewing relevant literature, we aim to understand how their proficiency affects their

teaching, administrative tasks, classroom management, and the educational

environment. This analysis aims to provide practical insights for educators and

policymakers looking to enhance digital competency in education

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE

According to Juliet Balagosa (2022), This study investigated the level of

competency of teachers in a Philippine state university in using Microsoft Office

applications. The study found that teachers had a basic competency in understanding

and using the internet and network applications and resources. However, teachers

showed a lower level of competency in demonstrating knowledge and skills in

information and data management.

The study also found that teachers' Microsoft Office skills were not evenly

distributed across the different applications. For example, teachers were more

proficient in using Word and PowerPoint than they were in using Excel.

Marcial et al. (2015) investigated on the ICT competency level of teacher

education professionals in the Central Visayas Region of the Philippines. The study

found that the majority of teacher education professionals had only a basic or
intermediate level of ICT competency. The study also found that there was a

significant difference in ICT competency level between younger and older teacher

education professionals, with younger professionals being more competent in using

ICT.

Meanwhile, Santos et al. (2019) investigated the on use of Microsoft Office

applications by teachers in public secondary schools in the Philippines. The study

found that teachers most frequently used Microsoft Word to create and edit

documents, Microsoft PowerPoint to create presentations, and Microsoft Excel to

create and manage spreadsheets. The study also found that teachers were more likely

to use Microsoft Office applications for personal use than for professional use.

The study of Garcia et al. (2021) focused on the factors affecting the use of

Microsoft Office applications by teachers in public elementary schools in the

Philippines. The study found that the most important factors affecting teachers' use of

Microsoft Office applications were their access to computers and their level of ICT

competency. The study also found that teachers were more likely to use Microsoft

Office applications if they had received training on how to use them and if they had

access to support from other teachers and school administrators.

Moreover, Lopez et al. (2022) studied the impact of Microsoft Office training

on the teaching performance of teachers in public secondary schools in the

Philippines. The study found that teachers who received Microsoft Office training had

significantly higher teaching performance scores than teachers who did not receive

training. The study also found that the Microsoft Office training had a positive impact

on teachers' ability to use Microsoft Office applications to create and deliver effective

instruction.
Overall, the literature suggests that many teachers in the Philippines need

more training on how to use Microsoft Office applications effectively. This is a

concern, as Microsoft Office is widely used in the Philippines, both in the educational

sector and in the workplace.

Synthesis of the Art

The study of teacher competence in using Microsoft Office is a relatively new

field of research. There is a growing recognition of the importance of Microsoft

Office skills for teachers, but there is still much that we do not know about the

competency levels of teachers in this area. The research that has been done suggests

that there is a significant variation in teacher competence in using Microsoft Office.

Some teachers are highly proficient in using Microsoft Office, while others have

limited skills. This variation is likely due to a number of factors, including teacher

education programs, professional development opportunities, and personal

motivation. There are a number of initiatives underway to improve teacher

competence in using Microsoft Office. These initiatives include training programs,

resource sharing, and support networks. These initiatives are making a difference, but

more needs to be done to ensure that all teachers have the skills they need to use

Microsoft Office effectively in their classrooms. One of the key gaps in the research is

the lack of standardized assessments to measure teacher competence in using

Microsoft Office. This makes it difficult to compare the competence levels of teachers

across different studies and to track progress over time. Another gap in the research is

that the focus has been on quantitative studies. There is a need for more qualitative

studies to explore the experiences of teachers who are using Microsoft Office in their
classrooms.

Overall, the state of the art for the study of competence level of teacher using

Microsoft Office is still in its early stages. There is a need for more research to

develop standardized assessments, to explore the different ways that teachers use

Microsoft Office in their classrooms, and to understand the factors that contribute to

teacher competence in this area (Michael B. Batan, John Raymond Levita, Edd

Vincent Penaflorida, and Anthony Andal (N/D).

Gap Bridged by the Study

Our research delves into the proficiency of teachers in utilizing Microsoft Office

applications for educational purposes. Despite existing studies on technology

integration in education, there's a gap in understanding the specific abilities teachers

need within Microsoft Office tools for effective teaching. We aim to thoroughly

analyze and identify the precise competencies teachers require within these software

suites. By doing so, our study intends to offer valuable insights that can inform the

enhancement of teacher training programs. Ultimately, our goal is to contribute to

more effective and efficient utilization of technology in educational settings.

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter includes the research design, key informants, procedure,

instruments, and data analysis.

Research Design

According to (Scribbr) Descriptive quantitative research is a non-experimental

type of quantitative research that aims to describe the characteristics of a population

or phenomenon using numerical data. In descriptive quantitative research, the

researcher does not manipulate any variables, but simply observes and measures

them.

Respondents

The group of respondents for this study comprises Senior High School Teachers

from Camaligan National High School, There are a total of 15 teachers included in the

study consisting of 5 male teachers and 10 female teachers. The age range of the

participants is from 27 to 45 years old. These teachers primarily use Microsoft Office

for their administrative tasks and classroom activities.

Procedure

To begin this research on teachers' competence in using Microsoft Office, the

researchers first discussed the topic with our teacher. We then refined the topic to

make sure it was suitable for research. Once the topic received approval, we created a

set of survey questions designed to collect the data needed to address our research
questions. Next, we selected participants for our research and obtained their consent

to take part. We created a survey form and conducted surveys over the course of one

week, focusing on how teachers use Microsoft Office and how comfortable they are

with these tools. After collecting survey data, we organized our findings into a table to

facilitate analysis and presentation. To finish our research, we submitted our findings

to our teacher for evaluation and feedback, which is essential for ensuring the quality

and validity of our research.

Instruments

For our research on the Competence level of teachers in using Microsoft Offices,

We used an approved set of Survey Questions as tool for gathering data. These

questions were designed to elicit information from the participants about their

Microsoft Offices use and how they feel using them. The interview questions were

carefully crafted to ensure that they were relevant to the research topic and could

provide meaningful insights into the research question. The Survey questions covered

a range of topics, including How the participants used Microsoft Offices, how well

they know how to use it, and how they feel using Microsoft Offices. This approach

allowed us to thoroughly assess teachers' abilities in incorporating Microsoft Office

into their teaching practices.

Ethical Consideration

For ethical research consideration particularly to protect the respondents, letters of

permission to higher authorities and informed consent letters to respondents were

given to inform them of the general purpose of the study. Likewise other ethical

procedures were followed like building trust to the respondents during the data
collection, as well as discussing how data gathered will be used in the study. In the

data analysis, the researcher stated different perceptions and anticipations of the

possibility of harmful and intimate materials to be divulged, protection of the

anonymity of the respondents, and the use of pseudonyms for individuals and places

to protect their identities. Moreover, in reporting the data, the researcher honestly

described and explored the concepts in order for the respondents not to be recognized.

Furthermore, the researcher will provide access to the research study to the

participants and stakeholders and share applied outcomes Creswell (2013).

Data Analysis

This study made used of tables to analyze the gathered data from the survey forms

given to Senior High School Teachers. The tables were analyzed and interpreted using

frequency, and percentages.

CHAPTER IV

THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Competence Motivation Theory emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation

and the desire to develop and demonstrate competence in specific areas. When it

comes to teachers using Microsoft Office, the theory can be relevant in understanding

the factors that influence their competence level. Teachers who are intrinsically

motivated to improve their skills with Microsoft Office tools are more likely to invest

time and effort in learning and utilizing these applications effectively. Additionally,

their belief in their own abilities and their confidence in using Microsoft Office can

positively impact their competence level. Overall, the Competence Motivation Theory

provides insights into the motivational factors that can influence a teacher's

proficiency with Microsoft Office.
