CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Computers are one of the technologies that students use regularly in today's generation.

Computers are at the heart of modern organizations such as banks, schools, communication

companies, the military, and computer transactions are part of everyday life, especially now that

we are in the middle of a pandemic, and the students are using them frequently as a virtual class

and as a means of communication. Literacy, on the other hand, refers to a person's ability to

comprehend information when reading and writing, as well as their ability to use their potential

and skills. Literacy includes not just the capacity to read and write, but also the information,

skills, and talents that help a person to think critically, reach their full potential, and participate

actively in society. In this study, computer literacy is defined as the capacity to effectively use

computers and related technologies, with a variety of skills ranging from basic computer use to

programming and complex problem solving.

In addition, computer literacy requires a basic understanding of computer programming

and how computers work. The use of the term "literacy" in relation to computers is not by

chance; it represents the belief of certain supporters that computer-related abilities are just as

vital as reading and writing skills.

In this case computer literacy allows students to expand their horizons and gain abilities

that they would not be able to learn in a traditional classroom. Students who have a better

understanding and ideas of how to use a computer are more important than ever now that we are

in the presence of a pandemic. Many students nowadays use computers because they do not have

full rights to have face-to-face classes, and there is still a threat of an increase in covid-19 cases

and variants. In this case, students familiarize themselves with how to use a computer, create

PowerPoint presentations, documents, and papers. As a result, this study has a greater impact on

other students who are still unfamiliar with or lack the ability to use a computer. Jou & Wu,

2012; Anderson & Petch Hogan, 2001

However, computers are difficult to comprehend for both students and teachers.

Nonetheless, computers are said to contribute to making a variety of tasks easier and convenient

to accomplish while maintaining accuracy, it optimizes the learning process for individuals, and

computers are used in almost all working fields. It is widely accepted that education is the

foundation for all technological and economic advancements in any country.

In the near future, the concept of computer literacy may need to adapt to changes in the

software and hardware environments in which it is used. The ability to utilize a computer and

technology effectively is referred to as computer literacy. The amount of familiarity with which

someone is able to use computer programs can also be referred to as computer literacy. And a

variety of other computer-related applications the number of people who are computer literate is

on the rise. At a phenomenally high rate a computer is a type of electronic equipment that can

process, store, and transmit data. To produce a result, data is processed by following a set of

instructions (programmed). Change is a constant for computers. They shrink in size, speed up,

and become more powerful. Modern society has been influenced by these changes. Make
yourself at ease using fundamental computer skills For example; a computer is similar to a pen

and paper. Students in primary and secondary schools, in particular, write a lot. Aesaert, K., van

Nijlen, D., Vanderlinde, R., & van Braak, J. (2014).

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to assess the computer software literacy on grade 7 students'

virtual learning performances. Furthermore, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How literate student in creating activities using

1.1. Microsoft PowerPoint presentation

1.2. Data analysis on Microsoft Excel

1.3. Document making in Microsoft Word

1.4. Editing in Adobe Photoshop

What level of computer literacy do Online Distance Learning (ODL) students in Grade 7

have in order to manipulate computer software to maximize their time while fulfilling their task?

1. How computer literacy will affect the academic performance of students?

2. How Important is having computer literacy in this time of pandemic?

3. How computer literacy will help students in their studies?

Conceptual Framework

This study will show the core elements that affect Grade 7 students’ competency in using

computer software, in terms of competency in Microsoft Office on Microsoft Word, Microsoft

PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook that transcend an avenue to students

academic performance on computer literacy.

Significance of the Study

This research can be beneficial for students in Colegio de Calumpit specially in grade 7

and anyone who works on a computer.

It is deemed significant to:

The Students. The direct recipients of this research output are the grade 7 who are

struggling with Computer software. In the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, several

seventh-grade students are unsure about using the Microsoft Office on their computers, one of

the few reasons is that they do not know how to utilize them. As a result, they may take longer to

complete their tasks in order to submit them to their Learning Management System (LMS).

The Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers, particularly those who do not

indulge themselves much in computers. This can help them improve their ability to create and

deliver PowerPoint presentations, papers, and other materials used in meetings or online classes.

The Employees. This study helps the employees improve their abilities and knowledge

in order to present themselves in a more professional manner while fulfilling their

responsibilities. There are employees who are still learning how to utilize a computer, notably in

the areas of passing papers, documents, computations on excel, and presenting PowerPoints.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will be conducted on the first semester, specifically from the month of June to

October: School Year 2021-2022. This study will limit its coverage to grade 7 students of

Colegio de Calumpit. The Researchers focus on investigating First Year High School students'

knowledge and capability in Computer Applications Literacy.

Location of the Study

The study will be conducted at Junior High School in Calumpit (Colegio De Calumpit)

located at Iba O' Este, Calumpit, Bulacan.
