In recent times, the world has witnessed a rapid increase in technological innovations.

This era
ushered in the advent of the electronic computer system among other modern technologies. At
present the computer techno- logy has permeated nearly all aspects of human organizational roles
and education.

Computer encompasses almost all facets of human endeavours. So much has been written on it and
its relatedness to all areas of human disciplines, which include computer/information technology,
engineering, agriculture etc. However, much work has not been done on computer and its application
and relevance to education. This work aims to fill this gap, as it discusses it importance to the field of
education

Today, computer technology in schools is one of the most far-reaching and fast growing
developments in education. Like maize in a plantation during a storm, countries all over the world
are bending towards the fad of computer education.

They can be used for instruction and they can perform many administrative task involved in running
an educational institute. Word and Data processing assists student with assignments. Because
computers are able to store vast amount of information in data bases, computer can also serve as an
information resource and research tool. Although computers contribute to the educational process,
they have also added to the responsibilities of teachers. Today school must teach computer literacy as
well and students must be introduced to hardware and software. They must be taught about the
potentials and limitations of computers and made aware of the social and ethical implications of wide
spread computer use. This requires teachers need to learn about computer themselves and educational
institutes must add computer science courses to their curriculum. Computer education includes
computer assisted instruction, the computational use of computers in classroom; computer managed
instruction, computers as an educational aid.

Today when students complete their graduation safely predict that they will face a job market or
collegiate situation quite different from that which faced their own parents after graduation. Many
jobs will probably involve some use of computers. Creative application of computer power can
therefore contribute to future job satisfaction and performance. Those high schools seniors
completing college will be faced with a radically changing environment for learning where
computers are used to perform the most tedious and repetious tasks, and where concentration on
more major issues will contribute to higher levels of subject matter understanding. Since details
computers in society.

Computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data. It has the ability to store,
retrieve and process data. The following are the importance of computer in education;

In schools, computers are widely used; and the need for computer technology and literacy in the
educational system has become more relevant. Computer has been found to be an effective device for
presenting an instructional programme. According to McCormick (1993), computers can be used to
diversify, develop and improve the pedagogical relation of teaching and learning. Also, technological
development can only be enhanced through proper acquisition of scientific know- ledge: which can
only be realized through relevant training in Science, Mathematics and Computer Education.

Instructional function, in this classroom teachers use computer to prepare teaching and learning
materials, such as search for materials that will be presented in the class, source of various literature
books for examples journals, also source of materials through search engine i.e.google search, safari,
mozira .as well as performing discussion through whatsap, sending assignment through E-mail hence
improving communication between student and teacher.

Management function; in this help in management of human resources and other resources apart
from human resources forexample, keeping student records, keeping inventory of items, arrange and
keep /store student examination results ,employees records, institution account through which
institution income is deposited ,enrollment records and advertising various things for example
employment opportunities.

Research function; in this the information gathered in can be stored in the computer in terms of
audio, visual and audio visual; it make ease to review on history or background of things or literature
review, a searching materials purposely for research activities and also obtaining data which are
grouped in statistics packages which simplify data analysis i.e. drawing graphs and source of
database in which different data can be obtained.

Gone are the days when the only way to research and do your assignments is through the library.
Today, the availability of a computer in education makes it a whole lot easier and faster to access
everything you need to research. In just a few clicks, you can get all the answers you need for your
school projects.
Library; in this computer can be used keep various teaching and learning materials in form of
databases system which make easy to access different materials such as books ,articles, research
report .also online materials can be accessed in easy way.

With the use of computers, a student’s life has been made very convenient. By just using this device,
students can write and research their school works online and communicate with their classmates and
teachers through email or other platforms for shared discussions and knowledge. Indeed, a computer
is a big help in making student life easier.

Including computers as one of the learning tools in school is essential. With the use of computers,
students are more likely to enjoy studying, resulting in better performance. They feel more involved
and focused when computers are in use. More so, using a computer in education lets each student
collaborates and, at the same time, teach them to become independent.

ne of the most common applications of computers in education today involves the ongoing use of
educational software and programs that facilitate personalized online instruction for students.
Programs like iReady use computers to assess students in reading and math. Students then work on
interactive reading and math lessons that are designed to target the specific academic needs identified
during diagnostic testing. Educational software like this makes it easier to differentiate instruction so
that lessons meet each student’s unique learning needs. These tools also provide a wealth of useful
data and resources that teachers can use to work with their students in the classroom and maximize
learning. Online assessments are more efficient than traditional paper testing because it allows for
more immediate feedback and data.

Computers also have an important role beyond primary and secondary education classrooms. Thanks
to computers and technological advancements, higher education is now more accessible than ever.
Many colleges and universities offer online classes, and some even offer degree programs that can be
completed exclusively online. Online classes and online degree programs make it easier for single
parents or students with heavy workloads to continue their education from the comfort of their own
home and at their own pace.

The computer as a tutor used in this way, the computer acts as a limited ‘teacher’. It may present
information ask questions and check if the student responses were correct, loop back and repeat unit
or branch off to a remedial unit if the students having difficulty and so on. At a more simplest, it may
be nothing more than electronic flashcards. At a more complex level, it may provide everything a
syllabus provides and much more interacting in speech, music and pictures, individualizing its
presentation continuously in response to the student's action and improving its ability to help the
students by being “taught to do new things”. Unit will provide a more comprehensive overview of
this use of computer.

Probably the most effective way to use the computer is in its application as a tool, by having student
learn by doing a task in a manner similar to the way an adult. Rather than having them count pictured
sets, the student should count the people of their table to determine how many pairs of scissors they
should bring. Rather than filling in colouring book outlines the students should draw to express their
visions. Students do not of course, conduct these activities at the same level as an adults, but the
nature of the activity is the same there is purpose and personal involvement.

The first administrative use of electronic data processing was for accounting and finance. Programs
were written for automatic billing, pay roll, general ledger and purchasing addition computer storage
of records like personal files and inventory lists some replaced convention record keeping.
Computerized record keeping improves upon conventional record keeping in several ways i.e. access
is easier, retrival faster updating is more convenient and the amount of storage space required is
reduced.

Storage and retrieval of students records is another important use of computers in education
institutions. At Universities, students record are created from personal information collected by
admission applications. Additional data is added as registration. By the time the student graduates the
record will contain a computer listing of course taken, grades earned, hours spent and degree
awarded. Records of registration and fees payment are also commonly put on line. Computer also
can be used in libraries for classroom schedule etc.

In conclusion, Computer and its related technology have completely revolutionized our lives. Now,
information technology is important in every walk in life. Undoubtedly, computer and information
technology great impact in our education system. Various technologies have been used to improve
the teaching and learning process. Information technology makes our education system interested
and effective. Students can learn better without getting bored and frustrated.
